Literary Trends: Women in Literature

Contextualization

Literature, besides being entertainment, is a powerful instrument for representing reality and the human being, including power relations and identity issues. In this proposal, we will focus on the role of women in literature, investigating their multiple facets through literary trends.

Women in literature have a rich but also troubled and sometimes silenced history. Initially seen only as secondary characters or objects of desire and adornment, women have gained space and voice in the literary world, acting not only as prominent characters but also as acclaimed writers. These changes reflect important socio-historical and cultural transformations over time and will be a fundamental part of our investigation.

Their roles, representations, contributions, and challenges range from fairy tales to postmodern novels, from struggles for social rights to gender identity issues, and all of this can be found and analyzed in the pages of books. Therefore, understanding the role of women in literature is also understanding a crucial part of society and the struggle for equality.

The role of women in literature has practical and important applications in the real world. Literature has the power to shape our conscious or unconscious perspectives and ideas about people and the world. For example, how a woman is represented in a novel can influence how women are seen in society, or how a young female reader sees herself. Similarly, literature can also challenge stereotypes and established norms, sparking discussions and critical thinking.

In this project, we will explore the role of women in literature and their current trends. For this, you can rely on some reliable sources, such as:

  • The book 'As mulheres e a literatura' by Itaú Cultural (available online for free)
  • The article 'A representação da mulher na literatura' published in Revista Conexão Letras
  • The documentary 'Porque escrevo' from HBO, which features several contemporary female writers and their creative processes.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Women in Literature: From the Pen to Representation'

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to explore the evolution of the role of women in literature, both as writers and as characters, and to analyze current trends in this field.

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will last for one month.

Detailed Description:

In this assignment, students should choose three female writers from different eras and analyze their literary production, their female representation, and the social context in which they were inserted.

They should also choose one work from each writer to perform a literary analysis, focusing on how female characters are portrayed and whether this portrayal has evolved over time. Finally, students should create a visual panel (whether a physical or digital poster) depicting the three writers and their respective female representations.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research
  • Books or literary materials from the chosen writers
  • Materials for creating a visual panel (cardboard, markers, prints, among others), if opting for the physical version. If opting for the digital version, tools like Canva can be used.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should choose three female writers from different eras.
  3. Research about the life of each writer, their work, the female characters in their works, and the social context of their time.
  4. Choose one work from each writer to analyze in detail.
  5. Analyze how female characters are portrayed in these works.
  6. Discuss whether and how the representation of female characters has evolved over time.
  7. Create a visual panel depicting the three writers and the female characters in their works.
  8. Present the panel to the class, explaining your findings.

At the end, each group must submit a written report with:

  • Introduction: Contextualizing the role of women in literature and the relevance of this theme, as well as presenting the selected writers and the project's objective.
  • Development: Explaining the methodology used, detailing the analyses performed, and presenting the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Discussing how the representation of women in literature has evolved over time and what the project's learnings were.
  • Bibliography: Citing all sources used.

The visual panel must be submitted along with the report.

This project will allow students to deepen their understanding of the role of women in literature and the impact of this representation on society. Additionally, by working in groups, students will enhance skills such as teamwork, time management, research and information synthesis, as well as creative skills for the elaboration of the visual panel.
