Dance Experience

Contextualization

Dance is a form of artistic expression that dates back to the beginning of civilization. It is a human expression used for both ceremonial and ritual purposes as well as for entertainment and enjoyment. Throughout history, dance has played a significant role in different cultures around the world, often symbolizing and reflecting the customs and traditions of a society.

Today, dance is celebrated both as an art form and as a recreational activity that can bring physical, emotional, and social benefits. However, many of us do not realize that there is also a rich theory behind dance. By understanding dance theory, we are able to appreciate dance at a deeper level, and we can also use this theory to improve our own dance.

Dance is present in all societies and cultures, and through it, it is possible to express feelings, emotions, and tell stories. Dance can be a very personal experience, but at the same time, it is also a collective activity that can bring people together. In an educational context, dance can be a valuable tool for teaching various concepts and skills, including coordination, rhythm, creative expression, and teamwork.

The 'Dance Experience' is a project that aims to explore the theory and practice of dance in the classroom. This project will provide an opportunity for students to explore different dance styles, discuss dance theory, and also create and perform their own choreographies in small groups. Through this project, we hope that students can gain a greater understanding and appreciation of dance as a form of art and personal expression.

To delve deeper into the subject and build a rich debate about the dance experience, we suggest the following reliable resources:

  1. History of Dance: This article provides an overview of the history of dance, addressing the role of dance in different cultures and historical periods.

  2. What is Dance: This article from Brasil Escola explores dance as a form of art and expression, discusses different types of dance, and also addresses the role of dance in education.

  3. 'Dance: Theory and Practice': This book by Isabel Marques is a comprehensive guide that explores the theory and practice of dance, an excellent resource for those who wish to delve into the subject.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Collective Choreography

Project Objective

The project aims to develop dance technical skills and appreciation of dance as a form of art and expression, as well as to promote teamwork and collaboration among students.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will choose a dance style and create their own collective choreography with a duration of 3 to 5 minutes. The choreography should tell a story or convey a message that the students consider meaningful. The groups will present their choreographies to the class at the end of the week.

Necessary Materials

  • Space for dancing.
  • Sound system to play the music.
  • Comfortable clothes for dancing.

Step by Step

  1. Choice of Dance Style: The group must choose a dance style to focus on. This style can be something the students are already familiar with, or it can be something completely new.

  2. Research: The group must research the chosen dance style, including its history, meaning, and technique. They should also start thinking about the story or message they want to convey through their choreography.

  3. Choreography Planning: The group must plan their choreography. This includes choosing the music and deciding on the dance movements for each part of the music.

  4. Rehearsal: The group must rehearse the choreography until they feel comfortable with the movements and the music's rhythm.

  5. Presentation: At the end of the week, each group will present their choreography to the rest of the class.

  6. Discussion: After each presentation, the class will have the opportunity to discuss the choreography, including the dance style, the story or message, and the execution of the dance.

Project Deliverables

Students must submit a written report after completing the practical part of the project. This report should cover each group's experience and, at the same time, present a theoretical discussion about dance. Here's what the report should contain:

  1. Introduction: Here, students will present the chosen dance style, briefly describe its history and importance, and explain the story or message they wanted to convey through their choreography.

  2. Development: In this section, students should discuss dance theory and how it applies to their choreography. They should explain the sequence of movements they chose and why. Additionally, they should describe how they worked together to create and rehearse the choreography, including any challenges they encountered and how they overcame them.

  3. Conclusions: Here, students should reflect on the project as a whole. They should discuss what they learned about dance and teamwork, as well as comment on the experience of performing for the class.

  4. Bibliography: Students should list all the sources they used to research their dance style. This may include books, online articles, dance videos, and more.

This project aims to provide students with a practical experience in dance, but also aims to encourage them to think about dance in a more theoretical and critical way. Through this project, we hope that students can develop a deeper appreciation for dance as a form of art and personal expression.
