Prepositions of Time

Contextualization

Introduction to the Theme

Time prepositions in English are a crucial part of grammar that help establish when an event occurred, is occurring, or will occur. They are essential for communication, as they allow us to express complex ideas related to time, helping guide our listeners through our narrative.

The most common time prepositions in English are 'in', 'on', and 'at'. Each has its own rules and specific uses, being essential to know when to use each of them correctly. For example, we use 'in' to refer to months, years, seasons, centuries, and times of day. 'On' is used for days of the week and specific dates, while 'at' is used for exact times and special time periods, such as 'at night'.

Furthermore, time prepositions also apply to the use of regular and irregular verbs in the past. This is because we often need to indicate when a certain action occurred. Understanding and correctly using time prepositions is fundamental for effective communication in English.

Relevance and Real-World Applications

In our daily lives, all conversations we have, whether in our native language or in a second language, revolve around three main axes: space, time, and causal relationships. Thus, time prepositions are an essential tool for expressing ourselves with precision and clarity when talking about past, present, and future events.

Whether reading news in English, planning a trip abroad, or communicating with friends from other countries, the correct use of time prepositions allows us to share our experience and understand others' more accurately. Therefore, learning and practicing time prepositions can open many doors in global communication, academic study, and professional career.

'Time Hunt': A Journey through Temporal Prepositions

Project Objective

The objective of the 'Time Hunt' project is to provide students with a fun and collaborative learning environment in which they can improve their understanding and use of time prepositions in English.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be responsible for creating a 'treasure hunt' game based on the time prepositions 'in', 'on', and 'at'. This project will last for a month, with approximately 5 to 10 hours of work per student.

The game should tell a story involving various events that occur at different times. The clues to find the treasure must be English sentences containing time prepositions. The correct interpretation of these sentences will lead to the next step in the treasure hunt.

Each group must create a minimum set of 15 clues. The sentences/clues should be constructed in a way that players need to use and understand time prepositions precisely to advance in the game.

In addition to creating the game, the groups must document in detail the entire creation process from developing the story to forming the clues and conducting the game itself.

Required Materials

  1. Pencils and paper to sketch ideas.
  2. Computers with internet access for research.
  3. Writing and drawing materials for preparing the clues.
  4. Camera or cellphone to document the game (optional).

Activity Steps

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should start by creating an interesting story that will be the basis of the treasure hunt game. This story should contain several events that occur at different times.
  3. With the story ready, students should then create the clues. Each clue should be an English sentence containing at least one time preposition.
  4. Next, the group should discuss and refine the clues, ensuring they are correct and that the proper use of time prepositions is essential to understand the clue.
  5. The group then organizes the treasure hunt game for other students in the class. They may, if they wish, document the game with photos or videos.
  6. Finally, each group should prepare a report describing the entire process of creating the game, from the initial idea to the practical realization. The report should have clear sections for Introduction, Development, and Conclusion, as well as a Bibliography.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The game story, including the list of clues and an explanation of how time prepositions were used.
  2. A report documenting the game creation process. This report should include an Introduction, where the group will discuss the importance of using time prepositions and the objectives of their project; a Development section detailing the creation of the story, the formation of the clues, the game setup, and the challenges encountered; and a Conclusion, where they will evaluate how their game helped better understand time prepositions in English and what skills they developed in the process. Finally, the Bibliography with all references used.
  3. Optional supplementary materials, such as photos, videos, or even a digital version of the game.
