Conscious Consumption and Circulation of Goods

Contextualization

Introduction

Conscious consumption is a topic that has gained prominence in recent times, being crucial for understanding our relationship with the planet and the environment in which we live. Geography, as a science that studies the phenomena and characteristics of the Earth's surface and the human relationship with space, is also interested in the study of conscious consumption.

Conscious consumption is a concept that encompasses a series of practices regarding the purchase, use, and disposal of products. It advocates the idea that when choosing what to buy, we should consider not only the price and quality but also the environmental, social, and economic implications of these choices.

Being aware of how our consumption choices affect the environment, the economy, and society is the first step towards conscious consumption. The actions we take can have a significant impact on the world, whether through the industries we support with our purchases or the way we deal with the waste we produce.

Contextualization

The phenomenon of conscious consumption is especially relevant to Brazil, due to its continental dimensions and great cultural and socioeconomic diversity. Furthermore, Brazil has a rich biodiversity and a great production potential, making it essential to reflect on how conscious consumption can benefit both the economy and the environment.

Within this context, it is important to consider the direction of product flows and wealth distribution, as well as the environmental impacts of this dynamic. Understanding these aspects allows us to visualize how the way we consume affects not only the environment around us but also the country's socioeconomic patterns.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Map of Conscious Consumption

Project Objective

The project aims to stimulate students' critical analysis of conscious consumption through research, group discussion, and the creation of a thematic map. Additionally, it seeks to develop technical skills such as map interpretation and creation, as well as socio-emotional skills like time management, communication, and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will research the production, circulation, and consumption of a product of their choice (e.g., coffee, chocolate, cotton, etc.). The idea is to investigate and discuss the impact of this product on the environment, economy, and society. Additionally, they should evaluate which conscious consumption practices could be applied in this context and what their impact would be.

After the research, the groups should create a digital thematic map representing the gathered information. The map should depict Brazil according to production regions, main circulation flows, and key consumption centers of the chosen product. The digital map creation tool can be chosen by the students, with Google My Maps being an accessible option.

Required Materials

  1. Internet access for research.
  2. Computer or device for creating the digital map.
  3. Program or platform for creating digital maps (e.g., Google My Maps).

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Choose a product of interest for research.
  3. Based on the suggested materials and other sources, investigate the production, circulation, and consumption of the chosen product. Consider the environmental, social, and economic impacts of these processes.
  4. Discuss and define which conscious consumption practices could be applied in this context and what their impact would be.
  5. Using a digital map creation program, create a thematic map representing the collected information.
  6. Prepare a presentation to explain the map and the importance of conscious consumption in the context of the chosen product.

Project Deliverables

Each group must deliver:

  1. A digital thematic map, which will be available online.
  2. An oral presentation of the map and the findings about the chosen product.
  3. A written report following the format below:
    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance and real-world application, and project objective.
    • Development: Theory behind conscious consumption, detailed activity, methodology used, presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Key points, learnings, and conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: List of materials consulted for the project.

The written report should complement the map and the presentation, bringing arguments and findings in a detailed manner. Remember that group discussions and decisions made during the map construction should be recorded and commented on in the report.
