Protestantism is one of the main branches of Christianity and officially emerged in the 16th century during a movement called the Protestant Reformation. One of its precursors was the Augustinian monk Martin Luther, who criticized certain practices of the Catholic Church, proposing a reformulation of them based on faith and the Holy Scriptures.

This radical religious movement transformed the map of Europe, modifying not only the religious landscape but also politics and culture. The impact caused by this wave of reforms was not restricted to the old continent, reaching also America and eventually the rest of the world.

Importance of Protestantism

Protestantism plays an important role in shaping modern society. It influenced the diversification of Christianity and contributed to the flexibility of religious practices and rituals. In this sense, its influence can be observed in various areas, from politics to the economy, through art, literature, and philosophy.

Its impact extends to the present day and can be noticed in the diversity of existing Protestant denominations worldwide, as well as in the formation of various nations. Furthermore, the ideas proposed by Protestantism, such as freedom of conscience and the valorization of the individual, have influenced the formation of the principles of democracy and human rights as we understand them today.

Practical Activity: 'Paths of the Reformation: Connections and Impacts of Protestantism'

Project Objective

This project aims to provide students with a deep understanding of the impact of Protestantism on global history and culture, as well as to develop research, collaboration, presentation, and writing skills.

Detailed Project Description

In groups of 3 to 5, students will produce a series of short documentary videos (5 to 10 minutes each) focused on different aspects of Protestantism, including its origins, branches, cultural, social, and political impacts, and its presence today. Each group will be responsible for one video, and together they will form a complete documentary on the topic.

Additionally, students will write a detailed report on the topic addressed, including the research and video production processes, as well as the conclusions drawn.

Required Materials

• Internet access for research;
• Device for video recording (can be a smartphone);
• Video editing software (several free options available);
• Reading material on the topic (books, articles, documentaries).

Activity Steps

Step 1: Planning and Research (Approximately 4 hours)

Divided into groups, students will start by identifying and dividing responsibilities within the team. They will decide on the specific focus of their project. Topics may include:

• Origin and principles of Protestantism;
• Different branches of Protestantism (Lutheranism, Calvinism, Anglicanism, etc.);
• The impact of Protestantism on the economy (the Protestant work ethic and the spirit of capitalism);
• Protestantism and democracy;
• Protestantism in Brazil.

After deciding on the topic, students will begin the research phase. They should look for reliable sources on the topic and gather relevant information for their video.

Step 2: Script and Video Production (Approximately 6 hours)

In the second stage of the project, students will write a script for the video, detailing what will be said and shown. They must ensure that the video is informative, engaging, and clear.

With the script in hand, students will start recording the video. They can use images from the internet, photographs, graphics, or drawings to illustrate the content. It is recommended that a group member narrates the script.

Step 3: Editing and Finalization (Approximately 2 hours)

Students will edit the recorded video, adding any graphics, images, sound, or music that can enhance the presentation. The final video should be clear, interesting, and informative, respecting the maximum duration of 10 minutes.

Project Delivery

The final project delivery will consist of the produced video and the written report. The report should follow the structure below:

1. Introduction: Description of the chosen topic, its relevance, and the objective of this project.
2. Development: Detailed explanation of how the video was produced, how the team organized, which resources were used, and how the research process unfolded.
3. Conclusions: Recap of the main points and description of the learnings and conclusions drawn about the project.
4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources used to work on the project.

Students should remember that the report is not just a record of what was done but also a space for reflection on the topic and on the learning process itself.
