Operations: Negative Numbers

Context

Introduction

Negative numbers are a fundamental concept in mathematics, whose main purpose is to represent values that are below zero. They are widely used in various practical situations in everyday life, such as debts, temperatures below zero, losses, among others.

Despite their everyday use, negative numbers can often be difficult to understand. This is partly because they are less intuitive than positive numbers: while we have a natural sense of what it means to have 3 apples, for example, it may be less obvious to understand what it means to have -3 apples.

To fully understand negative numbers, it is essential to also understand the basic operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In particular, multiplication and division can be especially challenging, as they involve rules that are different from those that apply to positive numbers.

Context

Negative numbers have numerous real-world applications. Temperatures below zero, for example, are represented by negative numbers. Debts are also often represented by negative numbers - if you owe a friend 5 reais, you can say you have -5 reais.

Furthermore, negative numbers are essential in many fields of science. In physics, for example, they are used to represent things like the potential energy of an object in a gravitational field (which is negative if the object is below the reference level), or the displacement of an object in a direction opposite to a reference.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Adventures in Extreme Temperatures"

Objective

The main objective of this activity is to deepen students' understanding of negative numbers and basic operations with them, through contextualizing theory in a practical and playful interdisciplinary project. Students will develop their skills in mathematics, geography, research, and teamwork.

Project Description

Students will divide into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be responsible for investigating the temperatures of different regions of the world. Each group will choose different locations with extreme temperatures (positive and negative) and will develop a presentation to share their findings, including relevant mathematical and geographical questions.

Required Materials

  1. Internet access for temperature research.
  2. Paper and pens (or a presentation software like PowerPoint) to prepare the presentation.

Step by Step

  1. Initially, each group must select at least two regions with extreme conditions, one with extreme positive temperatures and one with extreme negative temperatures.
  2. Conduct extensive research on the average annual temperature of these regions and record the data.
  3. Discuss as a group and solve mathematical problems based on the collected data. For example, calculate the temperature difference between the two chosen regions, the average temperature between the regions, etc.
  4. Additionally, they should explore questions like "What kind of life is possible in these climates? How do people adapt? What kind of activities are carried out in these regions?"
  5. Each group will prepare a 15-20 minute presentation explaining their findings and conclusions, emphasizing the application of negative numbers and their relevance in the real world.
  6. After the presentations, the groups should write a comprehensive report on the project, contextualizing the theme, the problems solved, the methodology used, the results obtained, and the conclusions.

Project Deliverables

Each group must deliver at the end of the project:

  1. Oral and visual presentation on their findings.

  2. Written report detailing the following sections:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the importance of negative numbers and operations with them, identifying the researched regions and their geographical contexts.
    • Development: Here students should present the theory on negative numbers and operations with them, explaining in detail how the research was conducted, the problems solved based on the collected data, and the methodology used to solve them.
    • Conclusions: Here students should revisit the main points addressed in the project, reflecting on the learnings acquired, the application of negative numbers in the real world, and the importance of socio-emotional skills developed during the project.
    • Bibliography: Students should indicate all sources they relied on to carry out the project, including websites, books, and videos.

This is a challenging project that requires a good amount of research, solving mathematical problems, teamwork, and presentation skills. It is designed to be completed in a period of 1-2 weeks, with each student contributing at least 12 hours of work.
