Context

Learning how to calculate the average is an essential skill in mathematics and has extensive practical applications in the real world. The average, also known as the arithmetic mean, is the value that indicates where the data in a distribution is concentrated. In mathematics, there are several types of averages, including the arithmetic mean, geometric mean, harmonic mean, and quadratic mean, each used in different situations depending on the nature of the data.

The arithmetic mean, which will be the focus of our project, is perhaps the most commonly used and best understood type. It is simply the sum of all numbers in a data set divided by the number of data points in that set. It is often used when all the data in the set are equally important and there are no outliers (data points that are significantly different from the rest of the set).

The average is a tool used in many fields, including economics, sociology, sciences, and engineering. This is because, in practice, it is used to interpret large amounts of data. For example, teachers use averages to calculate students' final grades, economists use averages to analyze economic trends, scientists use averages in experiment analysis, among others.

Practical Activity: 'Calculating the Park's Average'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a practical understanding of calculating averages and their real-world applications. Students will calculate arithmetic means based on data collected during a visit to a local park.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, will visit a local park and collect data of interest such as the number of people visiting the park at different times, the number of animals observed, among others. The students will calculate the arithmetic mean of each set of collected data and use these averages to make analyses and conclusions about the park.

Required Materials

  • Notebooks for data recording
  • Pencils or pens
  • Calculators
  • Masks and hand sanitizer for personal safety (COVID-19)

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 people.
  2. Choose the local park you intend to visit.
  3. Define which data you will collect at the park. It can be the number of people at different times, the number of animals observed, etc.
  4. Visit the park and collect the data, always taking responsibility and care due to COVID-19.
  5. After the visit, each group will calculate the arithmetic mean of each set of data collected.
  6. Then, the groups will analyze and discuss the results obtained. What conclusions can be drawn from the calculated averages?
  7. Finally, each group will produce a detailed report on the experience, documenting the data collection process, the calculation of averages, and the conclusions drawn from the data analysis.

Project Deliverables

Students will deliver a final report with the following topics:

  • Introduction: Contextualizing the theme of arithmetic mean and its practical application in the park project.
  • Development: Detailed description of the data collection process, the calculation of averages, and the analyses made from the calculated averages.
  • Conclusions: Discussion on the conclusions drawn from the data analysis. What information did the calculated averages bring about the park? What surprised the students? What were the project's difficulties and how were they overcome?
  • Bibliography: References to the resources used to learn about calculating averages and data analysis.

This written report will complement the practical work carried out in the park, allowing students the opportunity to clearly communicate the process undertaken and the conclusions drawn.
