Mathematics is an extraordinary science that combines the beauty of abstraction with the power of logical reasoning. It is a vast and complex field, but one of the fundamental points for learning this discipline, particularly regarding arithmetic, is the understanding of rational numbers and their ordering. This project aims to deepen the understanding of the ordering of rational numbers, a topic of vital importance for progress in mathematics and in many other areas of knowledge.

Rational numbers are those that can be expressed in the form of a fraction, where the numerator and denominator are integers and the denominator is different from zero. The ordering of these numbers is a process that consists of organizing them in an ascending or descending sequence. This skill is essential in mathematics, as it allows for comparisons between different quantities and assists in problem-solving.

Knowledge of rational numbers is not only theoretical; it has several practical applications in our daily lives. It is present in the measurement of non-integer quantities, such as the amount of liquids or the length of objects, in the calculation of proportions and ratios, which are fundamental for understanding percentages and growth rates, and in the interpretation of graphs and tables, which are very important tools in making data-based decisions.

Given its relevance, this project's task is not only to deepen the understanding of the topic but also to demonstrate its application in real contexts, making learning more interesting and engaging. Therefore, the content will be taught through fun activities, mathematical games, and other practical activities.

For the proper development of this project, I recommend the following reliable resources in Portuguese:

  1. The book "Matemática e Realidade" by Gelson Iezzi and Carlos Murakami, which provides an excellent theoretical basis on rational numbers and their ordering.
  2. The website Só Matemática (www.somatematica.com.br), which offers a variety of didactic resources, including video lessons, solved exercises, and mathematical games.

Practical Activity: "Ordering the World of Rational Numbers"

Project Objective

This project aims to develop students' understanding of the ordering of rational numbers and the application of this knowledge in real contexts, while also strengthening skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, logical thinking, and time management.

Project Description

The student groups will create a game that involves the ordering of rational numbers. The main objective of the game will be to order in ascending or descending order a series of rational numbers presented throughout the game, which can be in the form of a fraction, decimal, or percentage.

Necessary Materials

  • Cardboard paper;
  • Colored cardboards;
  • Colored pens;
  • Scissors;
  • Ruler;
  • Dice (2 units);
  • Miniatures or pawns to represent the players.

Step by Step

  1. Game Planning: Students should start the project by defining the main rules of the game, such as the objective, dynamics, number of players, among others. It is important that all group members contribute to this phase.

  2. Development of Questions: Students should create different "challenges" involving the ordering of rational numbers. These challenges can be solved in different ways, such as through multiple-choice questions, problems to solve, or situations to describe.

  3. Creation of the Board: The game board can be created freely, being linear, circular, spiral, etc. At each square of the board, the player must face a challenge that, if overcome, will allow them to advance in the game.

  4. Game Execution: After creating the game, students should conduct tests to adjust the difficulty level and ensure that the game is fun and educational.

  5. Game Presentation: Finally, students should present their game to the class, explaining its rules, objectives, and challenges.

Project Deliverables

  • Game Design: The complete game, including the board, pieces, and challenge cards.

  • Project Report: Students must submit a detailed project report, including:

    1. Introduction: The relevance and application of rational numbers in the real world, the description of the project and its objectives should be explained at the beginning of the report.

    2. Development: In this section, students should explain the theory of rational numbers and their ordering, describe in detail the game they created, including its rules and objectives, and share the challenges they faced and how they solved them.

    3. Conclusions: Finally, students should analyze what they learned from the project, the challenges overcome, the results obtained, and the skills developed.

    4. Bibliography: All resources used for the project development should be listed in this section.

The game created will also be a final product, where students will be able to showcase their creativity, teamwork skills, and of course, their acquired knowledge about the ordering of rational numbers.
