The average is one of the most common statistical measures used in our current society. It is important and helps us better understand data, such as the average grades in a class of students, the average height of a basketball team, or even the average income in a country.
The average is an important indicator that helps us have a general and comprehensive understanding of a set of data. It is as if we were summarizing a large amount of information into a single number, which helps us understand the general trend of that set. This project will allow us to better understand the concept of averages and how to calculate different types of averages.
Introduction
There are different types of averages and each has a specific utility. The arithmetic average, for example, is the most common. It is simply the sum of all numbers in a set, divided by the total number of numbers in that set.
However, there are other types of averages, such as the geometric average, the harmonic average, and the weighted average, which are also important and are used in specific situations. Let's learn about each of them and understand when and why to use them.
Furthermore, we will learn how to calculate the average in different situations and contexts, and with different types of data. This will allow us to make better decisions and have a better understanding of the data.
Practical Activity: The Journey of Averages
Project Objective
The objective of the project is to consolidate students' understanding of different types of averages (arithmetic, geometric, harmonic, and weighted) through the completion of a practical project that involves data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
Project Description
The project 'The Journey of Averages' will be a collaborative work to be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students. The project should be executed in about twelve hours per student, divided over several sessions throughout two weeks.
The project consists of data collection and calculation of different types of averages from this data, which may be related to any topic of interest to the students (for example, movie ratings, height of basketball team players, car speeds on a highway, etc.).
In addition to Mathematics, the project will also have elements of Science, as students will have to apply the scientific method to plan and conduct their study, and of Portuguese, as they will have to write a detailed report on their project.
Required Materials
- Paper and pencil for notes
- Computer with internet access for research and data collection
- Spreadsheet software (such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets) for data analysis

Topic Selection: Each group must choose a topic for their research. The topic should be something that allows the collection of a set of numerical data. Some examples of topics may include: the height of basketball team players, car speeds on a highway, or movie ratings on a review site.

Data Collection: Students must research and collect data on their topic. They should collect a sufficient amount of data to perform a meaningful analysis (at least 30 data points).
