Physical Exercise and Physical Activity

Contextualization

Physical activity and exercise are essential practices for the well-being of any individual, especially during the growth and development of children and adolescents. Although these two terms are often used interchangeably, they have distinct meanings, and it is crucial to understand their differences so that we can incorporate them properly into our routines.

Theoretical Introduction

Physical activity refers to any body movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure. This includes daily actions such as walking, running, climbing stairs, or even household activities like cleaning the house, washing the car, among others. Physical activity is an unstructured practice that is part of our daily lives.

On the other hand, exercise is a subcategory of physical activity. It is planned, structured, and repetitive, performed with the aim of improving or maintaining physical fitness. When we exercise, there is an intention and a goal behind the action, whether it is to improve strength, endurance, flexibility, or even to reduce stress.

Theme Contextualization

Understanding the difference between physical activity and exercise is vital, especially in a world where sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity are increasingly present. Furthermore, it is extremely important for 7th-grade students to understand these concepts as it can help them develop a more active and healthy lifestyle.

Moreover, physical activity and exercise are essential to prevent various diseases, such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes, and even improve mental health and overall well-being. Therefore, it is relevant for students to understand the importance of incorporating them into their daily routines, whether at school, at home, or in their communities.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Deciphering Physical Activity and Exercise

Project Objective:

The purpose of this project is to allow students to explore the difference between physical activity and exercise and the importance of these concepts for health. Students should be able to understand, apply, and explain these concepts in the context of everyday life.

Detailed Project Description:

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will last approximately one month. Students will work together to research, discuss, plan, and execute a presentation and a detailed report on the topic.

Students must:

  1. Conduct theoretical research on the concepts of physical activity and exercise.

  2. Identify examples of physical activities and exercises in their daily lives.

  3. Plan and carry out a practical activity involving the participation of all group members. Students must create a plan of physical activities and exercises for a week, considering the reality and resources available in their community.

  4. Promote a debate on the importance of exercise and physical activity for health.

  5. Prepare a final presentation and a detailed report.

Required Materials:

  1. Internet access for research.

  2. Computer or tablet for writing the report and creating the presentation.

  3. Access to a suitable location to carry out practical activities such as a park, gym, or even at home.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Each group should conduct theoretical research on the concepts of physical activity and exercise and identify examples in their daily lives.

  3. Next, the groups should create a one-week plan with physical activities and exercises they can do together. This plan should include a detailed description of each activity or exercise, the time required to perform it, and the necessary resources.

  4. Students must execute the plan for one week, noting their progress and any difficulties encountered.

  5. At the end of the week, each group will hold a debate on the importance of physical activity and exercise for health.

  6. Students will prepare a final presentation and a detailed report.

Project Deliverables

Upon completion of the project, students must deliver:

  1. The one-week plan with physical activities and exercises.

  2. A detailed report on the project including:

    • Introduction: In this section, the group must contextualize the theme, its relevance, real-world application, and the objective of this project.

    • Development: The group must explain the theory behind the central themes of the project, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.

    • Conclusion: The group must conclude the work, summarize its main points, explain the lessons learned, and draw conclusions from the project.

    • Bibliography: The group must indicate the sources used to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

  3. An oral presentation on the project.

Each deliverable should complement the others. The one-week plan with physical activities and exercises should be presented and discussed in the report and the oral presentation. The report should detail the students' experience during the project execution, reflect on the learning obtained, and connect theory to practice. The oral presentation should summarize the project, highlighting the main lessons learned and the results achieved.
