Physical Exercise and Physical Activity

Contextualization

Physical activity can be defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure. It encompasses a variety of activities including sports, exercises, outdoor play, household chores, etc. On the other hand, physical exercise can be considered a subcategory of physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and aims at improving or maintaining physical fitness.

In our 21st century, characterized by extreme sedentary lifestyles and high rates of heart diseases, diabetes, obesity, and other health issues linked to physical inactivity, developing skills and knowledge about physical exercise and physical activity is essential for promoting healthier lifestyles.

Introduction

Understanding the difference between these two concepts - physical activity and physical exercise - is crucial for making conscious choices about our well-being and health. Both present significant benefits for physical and mental health, contributing to the prevention of chronic diseases, mood improvement, and increased longevity.

Physical education plays a crucial role in raising awareness among young people about the importance of these practices and how to incorporate them into daily routines. Through practical experiences, students will learn to distinguish physical exercise from physical activity and create exercise proposals that can be performed both inside and outside the school environment.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Move: The Distinction Between Exercise and Physical Activity'

Project Objective:

Students will organize and implement an 'Activities Festival', where they will showcase a variety of physical activities and exercises. The goal is that by the end of the project, each student will be able to clearly differentiate what physical exercise is from physical activity and be able to propose alternatives for practicing both.

Detailed Project Description:

Each group must choose three examples of physical exercise and three examples of physical activity. They will conduct research to better understand each of the chosen activities and, subsequently, they should plan and implement these activities during the 'Activities Festival'.

The final deliverable will be the organization and execution of such activities at the 'Activities Festival' and a written report detailing the project and its results.

Required Materials:

  1. Sports equipment (according to the chosen activities)
  2. Computer with internet access (for research)
  3. Paper and pen (for notes and planning)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Initial Research: Each group should research and choose three examples of physical exercise and three examples of physical activity. They should understand the difference between the two categories and be able to justify why each example fits into its respective category.
  2. Festival Planning: The groups will plan how they will carry out the six activities during the festival. They should consider factors such as the time needed for each activity, necessary materials, among others.
  3. Preparation: The groups should prepare to carry out the activities. This may include practicing the activities, obtaining necessary equipment, among others.
  4. Festival Execution: Each group will have a specific time to present and carry out their activities during the festival. They should be able to explain the difference between physical activity and physical exercise and explain why each activity is classified as such.
  5. Report Writing: Finally, students will write a detailed report on the project, explaining the research and planning process, the festival execution, and what conclusions were drawn based on the experience.

Project Deliverables:

  • Written Report: The report should include an introduction explaining the project's purpose, the relevance of the chosen theme, and the methodology used. In the development, students should describe in detail the chosen activities, the research and planning process, the festival execution, and the results obtained. In the conclusion, they should summarize the main points addressed, indicate the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn. Finally, students should indicate the bibliography used to work on the project.
  • Festival Execution: The groups must plan and carry out the 'Activities Festival'. During the festival, they should be able to explain the difference between physical activity and physical exercise, as well as justify why each activity is classified in its respective category.
