Physical Exercise and Physical Activity

Context

Introduction

Movement is an indispensable part of human existence and plays a pivotal role in promoting overall health and well-being. In this regard, understanding the distinction between physical activity and exercise is of paramount importance. Physical activity can be defined as any bodily movement that expends energy. It encompasses everyday activities such as walking to school, playing with friends, or helping with household chores. Exercise, on the other hand, is a subset of physical activity that is planned, structured, and repetitive. It is performed with the primary goal of improving or maintaining physical fitness or health, such as going to the gym, taking a dance class, or playing organized soccer.

Although there is an overlap, these concepts are not synonymous. The defining factors lie in the regularity, intensity, and purpose. Exercise is a type of physical activity, but not all physical activity is exercise.

Contextualization

Recognizing and differentiating between physical activity and exercise are crucial for improving overall health, extending longevity, and enhancing the quality of life. Our bodies and minds thrive when we engage in both regularly. Exercise has the potential to ward off chronic diseases, improve mood, and reduce stress. Meanwhile, daily physical activity decreases the risk of heart disease and diabetes, promotes better sleep, and boosts energy levels.

However, a growing trend of sedentary lifestyles, especially among the youth, has been observed globally. This makes the need for understanding and promoting physical activity and exercise more critical than ever before. Furthermore, in times of restrictions and confinement, such as during the current health crisis, the quest for home-based physical activities and exercises has become even more pertinent.

Hands-on Activity

Activity Title: Physical Activity VS Exercise: Acknowledging the Difference and Promoting Well-being.

Project Goal:

To develop a deep understanding of the difference between physical activity and exercise, their health benefits, and how to promote them amidst social distancing. Additionally, students will enhance their collaboration, time management, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will form groups of 3-5 members. Each group will be responsible for designing a "Home-based Physical Activity & Exercise Program" that can be implemented during the period of social distancing.

The program should include:

  1. A detailed description of the difference between physical activity and exercise.
  2. A list of sample physical activities that can be performed at home.
  3. A list of sample exercises that can be performed at home, along with descriptions of their proper form and precautions to avoid injuries. It is important that the exercises can be done with minimal or no equipment.
  4. A weekly plan for physical activity and exercise that combines the sample activities and exercises.
  5. An analysis of the health benefits that can be achieved by following the program.
  6. A discussion on the importance of maintaining a routine of physical activity and exercise, especially during the period of social distancing.

Required Materials:

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Textbook "Physical Education and Health: Theory and Practice" by Amauri A. Bássoli de Oliveira.
  • Writing materials (pens, pencils, paper)
  • Word processing software (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.)

Step-by-Step Instructions for the Activity:

Research and Understanding (4 hours)

  1. Students will begin by reading and discussing relevant chapters from the textbook "Physical Education and Health: Theory and Practice" and conducting online research to understand the difference between physical activity and exercise.

Program Creation (4 hours)

  1. After grasping the distinctions between physical activity and exercise, students will research and list down physical activities and exercises that can be done at home.

Weekly Plan (2 hours)

  1. Students will then collaborate to create a weekly physical activity and exercise plan using the sample activities and exercises they have researched.

Benefits Analysis and Significance (3 hours)

  1. Next, students will research, discuss, and write an analysis of the health benefits that can be achieved by following the program and the importance of maintaining a routine of physical activity and exercise.

Document Compilation (5 hours)

  1. Finally, students will compile their findings and the program into a final report. The report should be divided into four sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and References. In the Introduction, students should include a brief overview of the topic and the purpose of the project. In the Development section, students should detail the difference between physical activity and exercise, describe the suggested activities and exercises, explain the weekly plan and the methodology they used to create it. In the Conclusions section, students should analyze the health benefits of the program and discuss the significance of maintaining a routine of physical activity and exercise. In the References section, students should list all the sources they consulted during their research.

Project Deliverables:

The main deliverable of this project is the "Home-based Physical Activity & Exercise Program" documented in a written report. This report will not only showcase the students' comprehension of the difference between physical activity and exercise but also present a practical plan that can benefit the health of all. The document should be presented in a manner that is accessible and comprehensible to a wide audience, not just their classmates or teachers. Additionally, the report should also emphasize the paramount importance of physical activity and exercise, particularly during times of social constraints.
