Precision Sports

Introduction

Precision sports are those where the predominant skill is the athlete's ability to accurately control their movements to reach a specific target. These sports require a high degree of concentration, coordination, patience, and dexterity. Popular examples of such sports include golf, target shooting, billiards, archery, among others.

In each precision sport, there are specific techniques and strategies that increase the chances of success. These techniques often involve the efficient use of the body and mind, as well as an understanding of the physical principles that govern the movement of objects involved in the sport. Understanding these sports at a deeper level can enhance the appreciation and experience of playing.

In this project, we will learn more about what precision sports are, their techniques, strategies, principles, and rules. As a way to apply our learning, we will organize a tournament of a precision sport chosen by the group, document the entire process, and discuss our conclusions.

Contextualization

Precision sports play an important role in our society. In addition to the physical and mental health benefits associated with regular physical activity, precision sports can help develop valuable skills such as focus, patience, fine motor skills, strategy, and stress management. Furthermore, they offer an opportunity for healthy competition and social interaction.

In the professional world of precision sports, high-level athletes compete in national and international tournaments, where the mastery of their skills and the understanding of the game's principles are pushed to the limit. However, these sports are also popular among amateurs of all ages, who play for fun, to relax, or to improve their skills.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Precision Tournament: Mini Golf in the Schoolyard

Project Objective:

The project aims to provide students with the opportunity to understand and experience a precision sport (in this case, mini golf), so they can appreciate the necessary skills and the physical principles involved. Additionally, the project aims to promote teamwork, effective communication, planning and execution of a competition, and reflection and writing about the experience.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Their mission will be to create and organize a mini golf tournament at the school, which will include the following phases: research and planning, field preparation, training, tournament execution, and evaluation.

Required Materials:

  • Golf balls (or suitable alternative balls)
  • Golf clubs (or suitable alternatives)
  • Various items for building obstacles (boxes, cones, PVC pipes, chairs, etc.)
  • Paper, pens, computer for documentation
  • Camera to record the tournament

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Research and Planning: In this phase, students should research the chosen sport (mini golf), including its rules, strategies, techniques, and physical principles involved (for example, the importance of angle and force of the stroke). Then, they should plan the tournament, including the field design, schedule, and competition structure.

  2. Field Preparation: Students should set up the field in the schoolyard using the available materials. They should be encouraged to be creative, including adding obstacles and challenges, but they should ensure that the field is fair and playable.

  3. Training: Before the tournament, students should have the opportunity to train to familiarize themselves with the field and improve their skills.

  4. Tournament Execution: Students will conduct the tournament. They should be both players and competition administrators, responsible for keeping things organized and fair.

  5. Evaluation: After the tournament, students should reflect on the experience, discussing what they learned, the challenges they faced, and how they overcame them.

Project Deliverables and Document Writing Details:

Each group must submit a written report detailing the project. The report should include:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of mini golf as a precision sport, including its relevance and real-world applications.

  2. Development: Details of the tournament planning and execution, including the field design, tournament structure, challenges faced, and how they were overcome. The discussion should be enriched with an explanation of the theory behind the techniques and strategies used, and presentation of the results (for example, who won the tournament).

  3. Conclusion: Summary of the main points, with an emphasis on the lessons learned and reflection on the experience as a whole.

  4. Bibliography: Sources consulted for the project research and planning.

Visual documentation of the tournament, such as photographs or video recordings, should also be included if possible. These materials will help illustrate the practical parts of the report and bring the tournament to life for the reader.
