Simple Machines are mechanical devices that modify a force. They were developed with the aim of performing tasks that would otherwise be more difficult to execute. Examples of simple machines include the lever, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, screw, and wheel and axle.

Thermal Machines are devices whose main function is the conversion of thermal energy (heat) into work. They are essential for many of the comforts and conveniences we have in the modern world, from cars to refrigerators. Thermodynamics is the area of physics that studies these conversion processes.

The concepts of Thermodynamic Equilibrium and the laws of thermodynamics are also fundamental to the understanding of this topic. Thermodynamic equilibrium refers to a condition in which a system does not experience changes when isolated from its environment.

Contextualization and Importance of the Topic

The importance of understanding and studying simple and thermal machines goes beyond our daily lives, as these concepts are present in many of our everyday activities. When using scissors (a form of lever), climbing a ramp (an inclined plane), or driving a car (a complex combination of various simple and thermal machines), we are using these concepts.

Furthermore, in the modern world, thermal machines are essential for energy generation. The thermal energy produced by burning fossil fuels or nuclear fission is used to move turbines, which in turn generate electricity. Therefore, studying these machines is essential to understand how we can generate and use energy more efficiently and sustainably.

Activity Title: "Building and Understanding Simple and Thermal Machines"

Project Objective

This project aims to practically understand the functioning and application of simple and thermal machines, explore the concepts of thermodynamic equilibrium, and reflect on their impacts on daily life and the world.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3-5 students will have the challenge of building three models: a "Lever," a "Pulley," and a simple model of a "Thermal Machine" (Steam Engine). Each model will be accompanied by a presentation explaining the operation and application of the model in daily life.

Required Materials

  1. Recyclable materials (boxes, bottles, barbecue sticks, etc.)
  2. Wire or rope
  3. Balloons
  4. Candle and matches (always use under adult supervision)
  5. Water
  6. Metal container (an aluminum can will do)

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. Preparation and Research

Each group should start by researching simple and thermal machines, using the recommended resources and others they find. Each group should then sketch their models, planning how they will be built and how they will operate.

2. Building the Models

Using recyclable materials, the groups must build their machines. Special care should be taken in building the steam engine, which involves the use of fire and should always be done under adult supervision.

3. Project Presentation

Each group should organize a presentation for the class, explaining how each model works, the theory behind it, as well as its real-world application. The presentation can be done live or as a video.

4. Written Document

After completing the practical project, each group must write a report containing: Introduction - Development - Conclusions - Bibliography used.

Introduction: Provide context on the topic, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

Development: Describe the theory behind simple and thermal machines and thermodynamic equilibrium. Explain the activity in detail, indicating the methodology/step-by-step used. Present and discuss the results obtained.

Conclusion: Highlight the main points, the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.

Bibliography: Indicate the sources that were the basis for the project work.

This document should be submitted along with the project presentation, as a theoretical complement to the practical work carried out.

At the end of this project, it is expected that students have developed technical skills such as understanding the basic operation and application of simple and thermal machines, discussing the role of thermodynamic equilibrium in various situations, as well as socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking.
