That is why it is so important to understand the changes that occur in our world. One way our world can change is through natural disasters.

A natural disaster is an extreme, rapid, and violent event caused by the forces of nature, which causes significant damage to people and properties. These can include earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and many other events. Natural disasters can have a profound impact on the environment, ecosystems, and human communities. Changes can occur in the physical, biological, or social components of an ecosystem, which can affect populations and even cause species extinction.

Natural disasters have the power to completely transform an environment in a matter of seconds or minutes. A forest fire can consume an entire forest, a hurricane can submerge a coastal city, an earthquake can bring down buildings and structures in seconds. These events can displace entire communities, destroy habitats, and have a devastating impact on wildlife.

But why is it important to learn about such events? Understanding natural disasters and the changes they bring to our world is crucial for our ability to prepare for them, prevent damage, and recover effectively when they occur. Furthermore, studying these events helps us better understand how our world works and how we can live more harmoniously with it.

Practical Activity: Catastrophe in a Box

Project Objective

  • Understand and assess the impacts caused by natural disasters on populations and ecosystems.
  • Develop and demonstrate research, communication, planning, and execution skills in a team project.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will choose a natural disaster (earthquake, hurricane, tsunami, volcanic eruption, landslides, wildfires, etc.) and research the causes, effects, and possible solutions to minimize damages and recover the affected areas.

Students will create a model representing the chosen natural disaster and its consequences. The goal is to create an interactive and educational presentation to explain the phenomenon and its implications.

Required Materials

  • Cardboards, card paper, or styrofoam for the base of the model
  • Materials to build and decorate the model (styrofoam, clay, cardboard, paint, scissors, glue, etc.)
  • Writing materials to prepare the presentation and report (paper, pencils, pens, computer, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Research the chosen natural disaster, detailing its causes, effects, and possible solutions. Use different research sources such as books, reliable websites, documentaries, etc.

  2. Plan and create the model that represents the phenomenon and its consequences.

  3. Prepare an oral presentation to explain what is represented in the model, the effects of the natural disaster, how it impacts the environment and people, and what are the possible prevention and recovery methods.

  4. Write a report on the research and project, including the following topics:

    • Introduction: Provide context for the chosen natural disaster, explaining its relevance and the purposes of the activity.
    • Development: Detail the information obtained in the research and explain how the model was developed and what it represents. Present the research conclusions, indicating the causes, effects, and possible solutions for the chosen natural disaster.
    • Conclusion: Reflect on the learnings acquired during the project and your conclusions about the studied natural disaster.
    • Bibliography: Indicate the research sources used for the project.
  5. Present the project to the class, showing the model and explaining what was learned during the research and project development.

Note: The project lasts approximately one week. Each student in the group should dedicate about 2 to 4 hours to complete the work.
