Greenhouse Effect and Human Action

Context

Theoretical Introduction

The greenhouse effect is a natural process that occurs in the Earth's atmosphere and is responsible for maintaining the planet at an average temperature of 15°C, allowing the existence of life as we know it. The process begins when solar radiation hits the Earth's surface, warming it up. Part of this heat is re-emitted back into space, but a portion is retained in the atmosphere by greenhouse gases, which act as a 'blanket' that prevents the escape of heat, keeping the Earth warm.

The main gases responsible for the greenhouse effect are water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O). Although CO2 is the most well-known, methane and nitrous oxide are, respectively, 21 and 310 times more potent in retaining heat than CO2. Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and wildfires, have increased the concentration of these gases in the atmosphere, intensifying the greenhouse effect and leading to global warming, an average increase in Earth's temperature.

Context

The impact of human activity on the greenhouse effect is an extremely relevant topic in the current scenario. The climate changes observed in recent decades are a reality and have significantly affected life on Earth. Extreme phenomena such as heatwaves, floods, more intense hurricanes, and polar ice melting are some of the direct impacts of global warming. Human action, through deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels, plays a fundamental role in this context.

Understanding the greenhouse effect, its natural functioning, and its consequences is essential to comprehend climate change and the role that each of us, as individuals and as a society, has in its mitigation. It is up to us, as educators, to provide the theoretical basis for this understanding and to encourage a critical reflection on our role in preserving the planet.

Activity

Title: Global Warming in Action: Greenhouse Effect Simulation

Project Objective:

In this project, students will:

  1. Investigate the natural mechanism of the greenhouse effect.
  2. Analyze how human actions affect this natural process.
  3. Create an audiovisual presentation explaining their findings.

Project Description:

Students will create a small-scale simulation of the greenhouse effect, document their observations, and then correlate these observations with the impacts of global warming on a large scale. They will also research human actions that contribute to the increase of these gases in the atmosphere, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. Students will use the information collected in their research and experiment to create an educational audiovisual presentation.

Required Materials:

  1. Two transparent plastic boxes with lids
  2. Two lamps (equipped with thermometers)
  3. Soil
  4. Two small plants
  5. Carbon powder
  6. Camera to document the experiment
  7. Computer with Internet access for research and presentation creation

Step by Step:

  1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. In each plastic box, place a portion of soil and a plant. One of the boxes will represent the polluted atmosphere, and the other, the clean atmosphere.
  3. In the box representing the polluted atmosphere, add carbon powder to symbolize the increase of CO2 in the atmosphere.
  4. Place the boxes under the lamp, ensuring that the temperatures are equal at the beginning of the experiment.
  5. Document the temperature in each box at regular intervals over a period of 12 hours.
  6. During the experiment, research the greenhouse effect, how it works, which gases are involved, why it is important, and how it is affected by human actions.
  7. After completing the experiment, analyze and interpret the collected data. Relate the data to what was learned during the research.
  8. Using the collected data and the information obtained in the research, create an audiovisual presentation that explains the experiment, its results, and how they relate to the greenhouse effect and global warming.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Written Report: Include an introduction where you contextualize the greenhouse effect and human action, a detailed description of the experiment, the research conducted, and the results obtained. The report should conclude with a summary that revisits the main points of the project and discusses the conclusions drawn from it. Additionally, do not forget to add all references used in the bibliography section.
  2. Audiovisual Presentation: This should be a recap of the project that explains the greenhouse effect, the experiment conducted, the results obtained, and the connection of these results with the concept of the greenhouse effect and the role of human actions. Make sure the presentation is easy to understand, creative, and engaging for the audience.
