Water is an essential resource for our survival. Not only do we drink water, but we also use this resource for many daily activities such as cooking, personal hygiene, watering crops, and industrial production, among others. In addition, water is also a habitat for various species of living beings. Thus, the study of water and its importance for life on Earth is fundamental.

We must keep in mind that, although it may seem abundant, drinking water is a limited resource. Of all the water available on the planet, only a small percentage can be used for human consumption. This resource is unevenly distributed throughout the world, which leads to several social and economic problems. In addition, due to improper waste disposal and pollution of water bodies, water quality has deteriorated in various regions, making it unsafe for consumption and putting the health of communities at risk.

In this project, we will address the importance of water for our community and how proper management of this resource is fundamental for the health and well-being of the population. We will understand how sanitation and water quality directly influence the health of the population and how we can become active agents to improve this situation.

Practical Activity

Activity Title:

"Conquering Water: The Role of the Community in Sustainable Use"

Project Objective:

To evaluate the impact of water use and management on the health and well-being of a local community.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people. They must select a local community (it could be their own neighborhood, school or city) and carry out an initial analysis of the water-related problems faced by that community.

Next, they must investigate possible solutions to these problems, taking into account the socioeconomic reality of the community, as well as the principles of sustainability.

Students can conduct interviews with community members, representatives of local non-governmental organizations, healthcare professionals, among others, to obtain relevant information.

After the information gathering stage, students must prepare an action plan to address one or more of the identified problems. This action plan should be practical, feasible, and consider local community engagement.

In addition to the practical implementation, students should conduct a literature review on the topic to provide theoretical support for their actions and conclusions.

Required Materials:

• Notebook for notes and interview records
• Camera or smartphone for photo records
• Internet access for research
• Material for preparing the final report (computer with word processing software)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

1. Group formation and selection of the community to be studied.
2. Initial analysis of water-related problems faced by that community.
3. Conducting interviews and gathering relevant information.
4. Literature review on the topic.
5. Preparation of an action plan.
6. Writing the final report, covering all the stages carried out.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, each group must submit a written final report, which must include:

1. Introduction: Description of the chosen community, the water-related problems identified and the relevance of the chosen topic. It is important to relate the topic to the concepts covered in class and/or in the recommended bibliography.
2. Development: Presentation of the information gathered during the research, the interviews conducted, and the proposed action plan. The methodology used to collect and analyze the information should be highlighted.
3. Conclusion: Reflections on the impact of water management on the health and well-being of the community, the main lessons learned during the project, and the possible limitations of the study carried out.
4. Bibliography: List of all sources consulted during the project preparation.

Remember that the final report should be written in a clear and organized manner, with coherence between the parts and following the standards of scientific writing. In addition, the report should demonstrate the teamwork and collaboration among the group members.
