Natural phenomena are events that occur in nature without human intervention. They are events or occurrences that involve terrestrial, celestial, and atmospheric processes. These phenomena can be classified according to their origin, for example, geological, meteorological, biological, astronomical, etc.
Three of the best-known geological natural phenomena, and the ones that will be the focus of this project, are volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. To fully understand these phenomena, it will be necessary to study key concepts such as tectonic plates, types of volcanoes, seismology, seismic waves, subduction zones, among others.
In addition to science, this project will also cover geography. We will use geography to learn about the location and distribution of these phenomena. This will help us to understand the impact these phenomena have on society, and how communities prepare for and adapt to such events.
Background and Importance of the Topic
Natural phenomena such as volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis are powerful occurrences that never fail to capture humanity's attention. This is due to both their devastating potential and their untamed beauty. They are a constant reminder that for all our technological and scientific advances, we are still vulnerable to the forces of nature.
Understanding these phenomena is essential for societal survival and progress. The knowledge we acquire from studying natural phenomena helps us predict and mitigate the impact of such events. It also improves our understanding of our planet and our place within it.

Activity Title:
Epicenter of Learning: A Hands-on, Interdisciplinary Study of Natural Phenomena
Project Objective:
The objective of this project is to expand students' understanding of natural phenomena - volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis. In particular, we will explore their formation, the geographical location where they are most likely to occur, and the consequences these events can have.
Detailed Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group must choose one of the three natural phenomena and carry out the following activities:

Research the theory behind your chosen phenomenon: This should include information on what the phenomenon is, how it occurs, the effects it can have, and the factors that influence its occurrence.

Geographical Study: Learn about the location of the phenomenon. Explore how tectonic plates influence its formation, and which regions are most affected by the phenomenon.

Carry out a hands-on experiment to represent the chosen phenomenon (suggestions for experiments are included below).

Compile a final report, as detailed below, which consolidates all of your group's learning.

Step-by-step Instructions for Completing the Activity
Part 1: Theoretical Research
- Research your chosen phenomenon. Find out what it is, how and why it occurs, the effects it can have, and the regions that are most affected.
Part 2: Geographical Study
- Locate on a map the regions where this phenomenon occurs most frequently.
- Research the relationship between tectonic plates and the phenomenon in question.
Part 3: Hands-on Experiment
For Volcanoes: Students can build a model volcano using clay, bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, and food coloring. The bicarbonate of soda and vinegar can then be used to simulate an eruption.
For Earthquakes: Students can build a 'seismograph' using a coat hanger, a pen, and a roll of paper. By moving the coat hanger they can simulate the movement of the ground during an earthquake.
For Tsunamis: Build a 'tsunami tank' using a large container, water, and blocks to represent buildings. By quickly moving one side of the container, students can simulate the waves of a tsunami.
Part 4: Final Report
Students should compile all the information obtained during the project into a final report. This report should include
- An introduction to their chosen natural phenomenon
- A summary of the research they carried out
- The steps involved in the hands-on experiment, the results, and
- The group's conclusions about the phenomenon studied.
Students should also include a bibliography in their report, listing all of the sources of information they used during the project. Sources should be reliable and up-to-date.
