Contextualization

Vaccination is one of the greatest advancements in global health. Through it, many diseases that were once lethal or caused major epidemics have been eliminated or controlled. Therefore, it is important to understand what vaccines are, how they work, and their relevance to public health.

Theoretical Introduction

Vaccines are substances that contain an agent resembling a disease-causing microorganism. This agent is made from a weakened or killed form of the microbe, its toxins, or one of its proteins. The body recognizes this substance as an invader and produces an immune response, developing immunity against that disease. The two types of immunity that a vaccine can provide are active and passive.

Active immunity is when the body itself produces the immune response after exposure to the disease (which can be either the disease itself or the vaccine, which simulates the disease). This type of immunity takes time to develop but is long-lasting, even lifelong.

On the other hand, passive immunity is when antibodies are transferred from one person to another, such as from mother to baby during pregnancy or through breast milk. This immunity is immediate but short-lived.

Contextualization

Vaccines are extremely important for public health as they prevent a large number of diseases, many of them lethal. Furthermore, mass vaccination can lead to the eradication of a disease, as was the case with smallpox.

However, there are still many myths and misinformation about vaccines that lead to a decrease in vaccination rates and, consequently, the resurgence of diseases. Therefore, it is essential to have a clear and accurate understanding of vaccination and its importance.

Practical Activity

Title: "The Vaccine Journey: From the Laboratory to the Community"

Project Objective

This project aims to encompass knowledge from the disciplines of Science, Mathematics, and Portuguese Language. Students will investigate the journey of creating a vaccine - the research, clinical trials, production, distribution, and administration to the public - as well as carry out an awareness campaign about vaccination.

Project Description

  1. Research: Each group will choose a vaccine to be the central theme of their project. They will research the history of the vaccine's development, how it works in the human body, the disease it combats, and its importance in the context of public health.

  2. Math Mystery: In the field of mathematics, students will apply statistical concepts to analyze data on the disease the vaccine combats and the effects of vaccination on reducing cases of that disease.

  3. Awareness Campaign: Each group will develop an awareness campaign about the importance of vaccination, addressing myths and truths about the chosen vaccine. This campaign can be done in the form of a video, podcast, flyer, poster, etc.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research.
  • Materials for campaign production (paper, pens, video or audio editing software, etc.)
  • Statistical data on the disease and vaccination, which teachers can provide or indicate reliable sources.

Step by Step

  1. Each group chooses a vaccine as the theme of their project.
  2. Students research the chosen vaccine, taking notes on the information that will be used in the awareness campaign and the final report.
  3. Students collect and analyze statistical data on the disease and vaccination. They should prepare graphs and tables to present this data clearly and effectively.
  4. Students develop the awareness campaign, taking into account the information gathered in the research and the analyzed statistical data. They should be creative and think of ways to convey the information in an interesting and accessible way to the public.
  5. Students prepare the final report.

Project Deliverables

  1. The final result of the awareness campaign, which should be presented to the class and possibly to the school community, depending on the chosen format.
  2. A written report, to be submitted to the teacher. The report should include:

Introduction: The introduction should contain the relevance and application of vaccination in the real world, the project's objective, and a brief description of the chosen vaccine.

Development: The development should include the theory about the chosen vaccine, the methodology used to collect and analyze the data, and a detailed description of the awareness campaign, including the justification for the choices made in its development. The collected data should be adequately presented in graphs and tables.

Conclusions: The conclusions should summarize the main points of the research, describe the lessons learned, and provide a reflection on the importance of vaccination.

Bibliography: The bibliography should contain all sources consulted during the project's development.
