History of Technology

Contextualization

Technology has always been an integral part of human evolution, from the Stone Age with its tools of stone and fire, to the current era of digitalization and globalization. When we refer to technology, we are talking about any innovation, from the wheel to the latest smartphone application.

The history of technology is a reflection of human history itself, highlighting how humans have continuously sought to innovate and create new tools to overcome challenges and improve their quality of life. Each technological advance has brought benefits, but also new dilemmas and issues, often drastically changing the way we live and relate to each other.

In this sense, we realize how essential it is to understand the influence of technology on our history and how it shapes our present and future. In this way, we gain a more critical vision, being able to better reflect on the impacts and consequences of new technologies.

Understanding the history of technology is not only about understanding how each innovation emerged and was used, but also about how it influences culture, economy, politics, and all other aspects of society. For example, the invention of the printing press in the 15th century not only allowed for the mass production of books, but also boosted literacy, the dissemination of ideas, and the development of science.

Digital technology, our current reality, has monumentally transformed the way we communicate and relate to each other, in addition to having a major impact on the global economy and politics. The importance of understanding the history of technology is that it allows us to reflect on where we are now, how we got here, and where we can go.

To deepen the understanding on this subject, students can refer to these reliable resources:

  1. "General History of Africa - Vol. I: Methodology and African Prehistory" - UNESCO Link
  2. "The computer in the knowledge society" - Néstor García Canclini Link
  3. "Innovation: The art of Steve Jobs" - Carmine Gallo Link

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Time Traveling: The Evolution of Technology"

Project Objective:

• To explore and understand the evolution of technology throughout history • To identify how technological innovations have affected and affect society and human life

Project Description:

Student groups will create a "timeline" representing the evolution of technology in different eras. Each group will choose three different eras in human history to study, analyze, and present their main technologies and impacts on society.

Required Materials:

• Computers with Internet access for research • Cardstock for the timeline • Colored pencils, pens, markers • Glue, scissors, tape • Access to books, encyclopedias, magazine articles, videos, podcasts, interviews, etc.

Step by Step to Carry Out the Activity:

Step 1: Form groups of 3 to 5 students and choose three eras in human history to research. The eras should be significantly different to show the evolution (for example, the cave age, the industrial age and the digital age).

Step 2: Do an in-depth research on the main technologies and innovations of each chosen era. Also, investigate how these technologies have affected people's lives, the economy, culture, politics, etc.

Step 3: Design on a large cardstock your "timeline" dividing it into three sections representing the chosen eras.

Step 4: In each section of the timeline, include visual representations of the era's technologies (drawings, collages, etc.), and write down the impacts and analyses you discovered during the research.

Step 5: Prepare an oral presentation for the class where each member of the group should talk about one of the eras and their respective technologies. The presentation should address the main technologies, how they work, their impacts on society, and how they have evolved or been replaced over time.

Step 6: Write a report documenting the research process, the learnings, the creation of the timeline, and the presentation. The report should follow the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography used.

Project Delivery:

The final project delivery will have two main parts: the presentation of the "timeline" and the written report.

1. Timeline Presentation: The "timeline" will be presented to the class, where each group will present their work, explain the technologies of each era, and debate the impacts of these technologies on society. This will be an opportunity to develop presentation, communication, and argumentation skills.

2. Written Report: Groups must prepare a report documenting the project. The report should contain:

  • Introduction: Briefly describing the project, the chosen eras and the reason for the choice.
  • Development: Detailing the technologies of each era, how they work, why they were important, and how they affected society. This section should include the description of the methodology used in the research (books, websites, etc.) and in the creation of the timeline.
  • Conclusions: Summary of what was learned during the project, how technology has evolved over time, and how it impacts society. This section should reflect on the learning and the contribution of the project to the understanding of the history of technology.
  • Bibliography: Listing the sources of information used for the project.

The "timeline" and the report will be evaluated both by the content and understanding of the subject and by the collaboration and teamwork.
