New Materials and Technologies

Contextualization

We live in an era of constant technological innovations. Technological landscapes are always changing, with new materials and technologies emerging at a rapid pace. But have you ever stopped to think about the impact of these innovations on our daily lives? How can they change our lives, our societies, and even the global economy?

In the field of Sciences, new materials and technologies represent a fascinating and critically relevant area of study. These new materials, many of them developed through advanced technologies, have properties that make them suitable for a variety of applications, from electronics to medicine and engineering. The technology that allows the creation and manipulation of these materials is equally important, as it forms the basis for the development of many future innovations.

In this project, you will be invited to delve into this topic. You will explore, discuss, and understand how new materials and technologies are shaping our world. And more importantly, how these innovations have the potential to transform the future.

The importance of new materials and technologies is evident in many areas. For example, in medicine, new materials are being used to develop bioactive implants, which can offer better results for patients. In the industry, automation and computerization technologies are reinventing the way we work and conduct commerce. As you can see, the impact of these advancements is broad and profound.

However, it is important to remember that these innovations also present challenges. How can we ensure that technologies are used in a safe and ethical manner? How can we ensure an equitable distribution of the benefits of these innovations? These are complex issues of great social and economic relevance that will certainly give you much to think about and discuss.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Understanding the Impact of New Materials and Technologies

Project Objectives:

This project aims to explore and understand the impact of new materials and technologies on our society, economy, and culture. Students will have to research, develop, and present a research project that evaluates the impact of a material or technology of their choice.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will choose a new material or technology to research. This material or technology must be recent (launched in the last 10 years) and have had a significant impact on society, economy, or culture.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research
  • Computer or tablet for report preparation

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion:

  1. Topic Selection: Each group must choose a new material or technology they want to research. This choice must be justified based on the potential impact this material or technology has had on society, economy, culture, or daily life.

  2. Research: Students must conduct in-depth research on the chosen material or technology, focusing on the following topics:

    • What is this material or technology? How was it developed?
    • What are its main applications?
    • What were the economic, social, and cultural impacts of this material or technology?
    • What challenges and issues does this material or technology present?
  3. Report Preparation: Based on their research, each group must prepare a report that contains the following sections:

    1. Introduction: contextualizing the topic, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
    2. Development: explaining the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, detailing the activity carried out, the methodology used, and the results obtained.
    3. Conclusion: summarizing their main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
    4. Bibliography: with the sources used to work on the project.
  4. Presentation: Each group must prepare a 15-20 minute presentation explaining their project and their conclusions. This presentation should be clear, concise, and engaging, with the main objective of informing and involving other students.

Project Deliverables and Connections with Suggested Activities:

  • Students must submit a written report, where they must expose what they have learned and researched about the chosen material or technology. This report must be written clearly and precisely, and must show a deep understanding of the chosen topic.
  • An oral presentation of the project will be held, where students will have the opportunity to share their findings and reflections with the class. The presentation will be evaluated based on the clarity of the presentation, the organization of ideas, the depth of research, and the ability to respond to questions from classmates and the teacher.
  • The final deliverables are directly related to the suggested activities. The research conducted by students is the content of the report and the presentation. The report and the presentation are the synthesis and sharing of the knowledge acquired during the project.
