Contextualization
Language is one of the main means we use to express ourselves and interact with the world. It can be used in various ways, depending on the context and purpose of communication, which is why the distinction between formal and informal language is so important.
Theoretical Introduction
What is Language?
Language is a means of communication. Whether verbal or non-verbal, it allows us to transmit and receive messages, build relationships, and create understandings. When it comes to verbal language, we can talk, in particular, about formal and informal language.
Formal Language x Informal Language
Formal language is one that strictly follows grammatical rules and is commonly used in more serious situations, in written texts, or in situations that require greater formality. It is more common in scientific articles, contracts, reservations, textbooks, etc.
On the other hand, informal language, also known as colloquial or everyday language, is characterized by flexibility and freedom in the use of grammatical rules. It is commonly used in everyday conversations, on social networks, in relaxed situations among friends and family.
Contextualization
Understanding the difference between formal and informal language is essential for effective communication. Knowing when to use each one and which expressions are appropriate for different environments and subjects can directly influence how we are perceived by others.
In the world of work, for example, mastering formal language is essential for writing emails, preparing reports, and presentations. Informal language, on the other hand, is more present in our daily interactions, on social networks, and in more relaxed environments.
Atividade Prática
Title: "Decoding Language: The Formal and the Informal in Social Networks"
Project Objective:
In teams of 3 to 5 students, the activity aims to analyze the occurrence and adequacy of formal and informal language in social networks, identifying their respective uses and contexts. Thus, the project combines the disciplines of Portuguese and Information Technology.
Detailed Project Description:
In teams of 3 to 5 students, the groups should select three different social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) and analyze posts on each of them, identifying examples of the use of formal and informal language.
Each group should:
-
Select 20 posts on each social network (total of 60), ensuring a mix of formal and informal language, including examples of colloquial and standard language.
-
Analyze, discuss, and record their observations on the uses of formal and informal language, the adequacy of language to the context, and the overall effect on communication.
-
Prepare a report on the findings, including a brief context about the social network, the relevance of the findings, and examples of the analyzed posts.
-
Create a visual presentation (poster, infographic, slides, etc.) summarizing their discoveries.
Necessary Materials:
- Access to the internet and social networks
- Materials for the preparation of the report (computer, text editing software, etc.)
- Materials for the presentation (according to the chosen format)
Detailed Step-by-Step:
- Formation of teams and definition of the social networks to be analyzed.
- Research and selection of posts on the chosen social networks.
- Group analysis and discussion on the uses of formal and informal language in the selected posts.
- Recording observations in a document, organizing examples by type of language and explaining the choice.
- Preparation of the report, including introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.
- Creation of the visual presentation to summarize the findings.
Project Deliverables:
The final project deliverables will be:
-
The written report of at least 10 pages (excluding the bibliography). The report should follow the structure of a scientific report, with the following topics: introduction (including the project's objective and the relevance of formal/informal language), development (including theory and activity in detail, with examples of the analyzed posts and discussion of the results), conclusion (including the learnings and conclusions of the project), and bibliography.
-
The visual presentation that summarizes the main findings of the students. This presentation should be developed creatively, using visual and graphic resources to represent the analyses made in a way that is understandable and attractive to the viewers.
In addition, students must manage their time so that the activity is completed on time. This project stimulates not only technical knowledge but also socio-emotional skills such as communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
