Determiners: Sense for the Text

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

The study of "Determinants of the noun: meaning for the text" is essential for the understanding and mastery of the Portuguese language. Determinants, such as articles, numerals, pronouns, and adjectives, are words that accompany the noun, attributing characteristics to it and contextualizing it within a sentence. They are capable of expanding, limiting, or specifying the meaning of a noun, playing a crucial role in constructing the meaning of a text.

Our Portuguese language is rich, diversified, and has several nuances, with determinants being the factors that add more meaning and different contexts to nouns. Understanding and correctly using determinants can significantly improve students' writing and communication skills, allowing them to construct more precise and cohesive sentences.

Determinants are fundamental not only for the structure of the Portuguese language but also for the interpretation of texts. Understanding how determinants alter the meaning of nouns allows students to better interpret and analyze texts, whether in exams, essays, or everyday readings.

Relevance of the theme and its real-world applications

Mastering the use of determinants in the Portuguese language is a valuable skill that goes beyond the classroom. In an academic context, determinants help create richer, clearer, and more cohesive texts, which can significantly contribute to the quality of students' essays, papers, and presentations.

Beyond the academic context, understanding how determinants alter the meaning of nouns is essential for understanding journalistic, advertising, literary texts, among others. In interpersonal relationships, mastering the use of determinants allows for more effective and clear communication, which can contribute to conflict resolution, expression of feelings, and building stronger relationships.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Determinants Game - Exploring the Meaning of Nouns

Project Objective:

This project aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore how determinants alter the meaning of nouns in a text through a playful and collaborative activity that stimulates teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group will receive a list of various nouns and will have the task of creating sentences in which the meaning of the noun is altered using different determinants. The groups will be free to choose the determinants they prefer to alter the meaning of the nouns, as long as they justify their choices.

After creating the sentences, the groups will have to exchange their lists of nouns with each other and guess which determinants were chosen by the other groups to alter the meaning of the nouns. The group that correctly guesses the highest number of determinants used by the other groups will be the winner.

Materials Needed:

  • List of various nouns.
  • Paper and pen to write the sentences.
  • Device for conducting research (optional).

Step-by-Step Guide for Carrying Out the Activity:

  1. Group formation: students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants each;
  2. Distribution of the list with the nouns: each group will receive the same list of various nouns;
  3. Creating the sentences: using the nouns from the list, each group must create sentences in which the meaning of the noun is altered using different determinants. The groups will be free to choose the determinants they prefer;
  4. Exchange of lists: after creating the sentences, the groups will exchange their lists with each other;
  5. Guessing the determinants: the groups must try to guess which determinants were chosen by the other groups to alter the meaning of the nouns in the sentences created;
  6. Declaration of the winning group: the group that correctly guesses the highest number of determinants used by the other groups will be the winner;
  7. Creation of the report: each group must write a report documenting the entire activity, explaining how the determinants were used to alter the meaning of the nouns, the difficulties encountered, the strategies used, and the lessons learned.

Project Deliverables:

  • Sentences created by the groups with the nouns and determinants, highlighting the alteration of meaning;
  • Report documenting the group's experience and learning, including the following topics:
    1. Introduction: Present the problem, relevance, and real-world application.
    2. Development: Explain the theory behind the theme, describe the activity in detail, mention the methodology used, and present the results.
    3. Conclusion: Summarize the experience as a whole, highlight the lessons learned, and draw conclusions about the project.
    4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources used for the study and implementation of the project.

The report will be the main means of assessing students' learning and must be submitted one week after the practical activity. The evaluation will be based on students' ability to understand and apply the theory, the creativity and clarity of the sentences created, the justification for the use of determinants, and the quality of the discussion and reflection presented in the report.
