Reading is a powerful tool that allows us to explore new worlds, acquire knowledge, and develop the mind. However, reading is not a passive process, but something that requires active engagement. Reading comprehension is the ability to understand and interpret what is being read. It is an essential component of literacy that helps students understand the text, relate it to what they already know, and apply it to the world around them.

In our daily lives, we use reading and reading comprehension in many different contexts. For example, we may read an instruction manual to learn how to use new equipment, decipher a complex traffic map, or enjoy an exciting novel. In all of these situations, effective reading comprehension is essential to achieve our goals.

Introduction

The goal of this project is to deepen our understanding and skills of reading and comprehension. We will explore different genres of texts, from informative articles to stories and poetry. Along the way, we will learn to identify main and secondary ideas, make inferences and syntheses, and analyze the author's use of language and style. We will also be working together in groups, exploring the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

Reading and comprehension are essential skills that serve us not only in school but throughout our lives. They help us learn and grow, become critical thinkers, and better understand the world around us. With these skills, we can face challenges, solve problems, and achieve our goals.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: From Reader to Author

Project Objective:

The objective of this activity is to deepen students' understanding of reading through active engagement with the text. Students will not only read and interpret the text but also create their own texts based on their comprehension.

Detailed Project Description:

In this project, students will be divided into groups of three to five. Each group will be responsible for choosing a genre of text (such as a story, poetry, informative article, etc.) and finding three texts of this category for reading and analysis.

After reading the texts, the groups should discuss the main and secondary ideas, make inferences, analyze the style and language used, and understand the structure of the text. After that, the groups will create a new text based on the discussions and analyses conducted.

Required Materials:

• Chosen texts (can be online or printed)
• Materials for notes (pen, paper, computer, etc.)
• Research resources (internet, books, etc.)

Step by Step:

1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5.
2. Each group should choose a genre of text and look for three texts for reading and analysis.
3. Read the chosen texts thoroughly, taking notes on the main and secondary ideas, making inferences, and analyzing the use of language and style.
4. After analyzing the texts, start a group discussion to understand the structure of the text and share ideas and interpretations.
5. Based on the discussions, each group should create a new text in the chosen genre.
6. Review the text created as a group, considering the structure, main and secondary ideas, language use, style, and all content discussed during the analysis of the texts read.
7. Finalize the text and prepare the presentation.

At the end of the project, in addition to the created text, each group should prepare a report on the reading, analysis, and creation process. The report should include an introduction contextualizing the chosen genre and its relevance, a discussion on the reading and analysis process of the chosen texts, and a conclusion involving the learnings and conclusions drawn from the project. The bibliography of the texts used should also be provided. This project should last one month, with an execution time of five to ten hours per student.

Project Deliverables:

• Created Text: The final result of the practical activity should be an original text created by the group, demonstrating the understanding and application of the concepts learned during the analysis of the texts.

• Report: The written document should detail the reading, comprehension, and text creation process. This report should have:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen genre, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

  2. Development: Discussion on the reading of the chosen texts, analysis of elements such as main and secondary ideas, inferences, use of language and style, and the process of creating the new text.

  3. Conclusion: Reflection on the learnings and conclusions drawn from the project.

  4. Bibliography: References of the texts used for reading and analysis.

Students will be evaluated not only by the final product but also by the process, including teamwork collaboration and the depth of their analysis and comprehension. The ability to effectively communicate their ideas and thoughts, both in the created text and in the report, will also be a fundamental part of the evaluation.
