In this project, we will explore what sentences and clauses are and how these concepts work in practice. You will learn to identify subjects, predicates, complements, and how different clauses can be connected to form more complex statements. We want you not only to understand the theory but to apply these concepts practically through various fun and engaging activities.

Communication is present in every aspect of our lives, from interpersonal interaction to social media. Those who master their language can express their ideas assertively, precisely, and persuasively. Moreover, efficient language comprehension and use are essential for almost any career, from creating a sales pitch to writing a technical report. So, learning about sentences and clauses is something that has a real impact on our lives!

For this project, you may use the textbook that we use in class, but we also suggest the following sources:

Hands-on Activity

Activity Title: Sentences and Clauses Theater

Project Objective:

Students, divided into teams of 3 to 5 people, will create and present a short play where the primary components of clauses (subject, predicate, complement) and the structure of sentences (coordinated and subordinate clauses) are the main characters and elements of the story.

Project Description:

Each team will have to create a dramatic story with characters that represent the elements of a clause (Subject, Predicate, Direct Object, Indirect Object) and sentence structure (coordinated and subordinate clauses). This play must be presented in a 10- to 15-minute video. In addition to the video, the group must submit a screenplay with the characters' lines, highlighting the clause and sentence elements.

Required Materials:

• Paper and pen for scriptwriting
• A camera for video recording (cell phone camera is acceptable)
• Video editing program or app
• Costumes or props that students find interesting to characterize the roles

Step-by-Step Activity:

1. Divide the students into groups of 3 to 5 people.

2. Each group should choose or create their story and identify characters that will represent clause elements and sentence structure.

3. Students should create a script for their play. This script must include all the dialogue and actions of their characters. It must be clear from the script which parts of the text represent the elements of clauses and sentence structure.

4. Once the script is ready, students must rehearse their play.

5. After rehearsing, each team must record their play.

6. After recording, the students must edit their video and prepare it for presentation.

7. The project culminates by presenting their videos to the class and submitting a revised and proofread copy of the script.

Project Deliverables:

Besides the play video, the students should prepare a written document containing:

1. Introduction: Describe the relevance of the "sentence and clause" theme, its application in the real world, and the project's objective.

2. Development: Describe in detail the theory of clause elements and sentence structure, describe the activity (description of the play's story, characters and their representations), methodology (scriptwriting, rehearsing, recording, and editing processes), and, finally, the presentation and analysis of results.

3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the work, including the learnings and conclusions taken from the project.

4. References: List sources that served as the basis for the project work, including books, web pages, videos, etc.

In terms of assessment, creativity, accuracy in representing the elements of sentences and sentence structure, script quality, and play execution, the video and the script will be evaluated. The quality of exposition of theoretical concepts, clarity in describing the execution of the activity, analysis of results, quality of conclusion, and bibliographic references determine the evaluation of the written report.
