Phrase and Sentence: Types of Subjects

Contextualization

Grammar is an essential part of the Portuguese language, and, in particular, the issue of phrases, clauses, and types of subject plays a crucial role in building cohesive and coherent texts. These elements constitute the foundations of our language, and knowing how they work allows us to improve our communication skills, both in writing and speaking.

The subject is one of the most important parts of a clause. It is the one who performs or receives the action expressed by the verb. There are different types of subjects, such as simple, compound, hidden, undetermined, and nonexistent subjects. Each of these subject types has specific characteristics and applications that help create different meanings and effects in our sentences.

The phrase and the clause are fundamental components of linguistic structure. The phrase is a statement with complete meaning that establishes communication. The clause is the sentence or sentence segment that contains a verb or verbal phrase. Understanding how these elements fit together helps us structure our thoughts better and express them more effectively.

Topics like phrases, clauses, and types of subject are more than just grammatical concepts. They are tools that allow us to better understand the world around us and express ourselves more effectively. For example, a writer will manipulate these elements to tell a more engaging story. A lawyer can use types of subject to argue more effectively. Therefore, a good command of these concepts not only makes us better communicators but also allows us to understand and appreciate others' communication better.

Fortunately, there are comprehensive resources that can help us understand these concepts. The book "O Português para Ser Aprendido" by Evanildo Bechara is a great place to start. The website "Brasil Escola" also has a detailed grammar section that covers phrases, clauses, and types of subject, among other concepts. Additionally, the online learning platform "Exercícios Brasil" offers a series of interactive exercises that allow students to practice what they have learned.

Practical Activity: "Grammar Theater - Phrase, Clause, and Types of Subject"

Project Objective

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of phrases, clauses, and types of subject through the analysis and production of a theater piece inspired by Brazilian literary works. Additionally, the project also aims to improve students' teamwork, time management, communication, and artistic expression skills.

Project Description

Each group (3 to 5 students) will choose a short story or a chapter from a Brazilian literary work and adapt it for the theater. Students should focus on identifying the phrases, clauses, and different types of subject present in the work and explain how they were used in the theatrical adaptation.

Required Materials

  • Books, ebooks, or PDFs of Brazilian literary works
  • Computers or tablets for research
  • Material for set and costumes (depending on the chosen play)
  • Camera for filming the play (optional)

Step by Step

  1. Selection of the work and group formation: Students should form groups and choose the literary work they will adapt for the theater. The work must be approved by the teacher.

  2. Study of the material: Students should read and analyze the chosen work, identifying the phrases, clauses, and different types of subject present in the text.

  3. Scriptwriting: Based on the grammatical analysis, students should write the script of the play. The script should include clear indications of the types of subject in the dialogues and narration.

  4. Preparation and rehearsal: With the script ready, students should start preparing the play. This may include creating sets, choosing costumes, and rehearsals.

  5. Presentation: Students should present the play to the class. If possible, the presentation can be filmed for future analysis.

  6. Project Report: After the presentation, students should write a detailed report on the project.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver:

  1. The play script: With clear indications of the phrases, clauses, and types of subject used.

  2. Play presentation: If possible, a recording of the presentation should be submitted.

  3. Project report: Students must elaborate a report on the project. The report should consist of:

  • Introduction: Explanation of the theme, the chosen work, and the relevance of understanding phrases, clauses, and types of subject.

  • Development: Details about the script creation process and the grammatical analysis of the work. Explanation of the choices made in the theatrical adaptation and how grammar was used to create an effect in the play.

  • Conclusions: Reflections on what was learned during the project, the challenges encountered, and how they were overcome. Students should also discuss how this knowledge can be applied in other situations.

  • Bibliography: List of resources used in the project, including the literary work, websites, books, videos, and others.

The project duration should not be less than twelve hours per student, including research time, preparation, presentation, and report writing.
