The Noun and its Determiners

Context

The noun is the word that gives meaning to everything around us, concretely or abstractly. We use it to identify people, things, animals, places, and feelings, for example. However, one of the beauties of language study is that words rarely work alone. Just like humans, words also have their 'partners' - some of them are the determiners of the noun.

Determiners are words that precede the noun to determine it in some way. They include articles, pronouns, and adjectives. They are extremely important because they make the noun better understood within the context of the sentence. For example, the sentence 'The cat is black' has the noun 'cat', the definite article (a type of determiner) 'The', and the adjective (another type of determiner) 'black'.

This theme is fundamental in the discipline of Portuguese because it is the basis for understanding and constructing coherent and cohesive sentences. Knowing how to identify a noun, classify it, and find its determiners is an indispensable skill for anyone who wishes to communicate effectively and precisely.

The Portuguese language is one of the richest and most complex in the world, and mastering it can open many doors, both academically and professionally. A good command of the use of nouns and their determiners demonstrates that the speaker has a deeper and more sophisticated understanding of the language. This can be seen, for example, in the writing of an argumentative text, where it is necessary to be able to use words precisely to convince the reader of your perspective.

Practical Activity

Title: 'The Noun and its Companions'

Project Objective:

Understanding the use of the noun in the Portuguese Language, its determiners, and its classification.

Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and must carry out a linguistic analysis of a literary text, identifying and classifying the nouns and their determiners. In addition, they will write an original story using the analyzed nouns, their determiners, and form derived words.

Materials Needed:

  • A book or text chosen by the group (can be in digital or physical format)
  • Notebook and pencil
  • Computer with internet access

Step by Step:

1. Text Selection:

Each group must choose a book or a text by an author they like for linguistic analysis. The text can be of any genre (short story, poetry, drama, etc.), but it must be at least two pages long.

2. Text Analysis:

Group members must read and analyze the text, identifying the nouns and their determiners. They should note the nouns, classify them by gender and degree, and identify the determiners (articles, pronouns, adjectives) that accompany them.

3. Creation of Derived Words:

From the nouns found, students must create derived words using the most common prefixes and suffixes in the Portuguese language.

4. Writing the Original Story:

After the linguistic analysis, the group must write an original story using the analyzed nouns, their determiners, and the derived words created. The story should have a beginning, middle, and end, and should creatively use the analyzed words.

5. Writing the Final Document:

The group must create a final report with the introduction (contextualization of the theme, text choice), development (text analysis and story creation), conclusions drawn from the activity, and the bibliography used. The introduction should justify the text choice and the importance of the subject. In the development, the group should explain how they carried out the linguistic analysis, the creation of derived words, the creative part of writing the story, and any problems and/or solutions encountered during the project. In the conclusion, they should summarize the main points and explain the lessons learned from the project. In the bibliography, they should cite the original text analyzed and any other sources that helped in the project's development.

Project Deliverables:

  • List of nouns and their determiners found in the original text, with gender and degree classification
  • List of created derived words
  • Original story written by the group
  • Final document written with introduction, development, conclusion, and bibliography.

The evaluation will be based on the understanding of the topic, the correctness of the linguistic analysis performed, the ability to create derived words, the creativity of the written story, and the clarity and completeness of the final written document.

The project should have a deadline of one week to be completed, starting from the start date. The total workload for each student should be two to four hours.
