However, the rapid dissemination of online information has not diminished the importance of understanding the structure and purpose of traditional news and reports; on the contrary, it has made this understanding even more crucial to differentiate reliable facts from 'fake news'.

News and reports are textual genres of great importance to today's society, providing us with information on a wide range of topics, events, and situations that occur in our surroundings. News articles are usually shorter and more objective texts, providing the public with a summary of a fact or event. On the other hand, reports delve deeper and in more detail into the topics, providing analyses and multiple perspectives on the subject addressed.

These text formats have specific structures and characteristics that differentiate them from other textual genres. Knowing them is essential for the development of a critical and conscious reading. Thus, understanding how the construction of these texts works, we can more efficiently analyze the information we receive, making good use of it in our daily lives.

Contextualization

The power of journalism and the media is unquestionable in our society. News and reports shape our understanding of the world and directly influence our opinions and attitudes. Whether through newspapers, television, or social media, we are constantly bombarded with news and reports on a wide range of topics. Therefore, it is essential to know how to distinguish and understand these two genres that are so present in our lives.

In our pedagogical practice, we have noticed that the lack of knowledge about the structure and characteristics of news and reports can lead to confusion and mere reproduction of news without any critical analysis. Thus, the objective of this project is to provide a deeper understanding of these textual genres, developing reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, which are so necessary in our current context.

Activity Title: 'News or Report? A critical analysis'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to promote the understanding of the distinct characteristics of news and reports through a collaborative and didactic work that involves analysis, writing, and oral presentation.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will choose a current topic of interest that has visibility in the media. Each group should analyze and compare five news articles and five reports that address their chosen topic, paying attention to the differences and similarities present in both.

After the analysis, each group will write their own news article and report on the topic, demonstrating an understanding of the structural and stylistic differences between the two forms.

Finally, the groups will prepare an oral presentation of the project, explaining the chosen topic, the characteristics observed in the analyzed news and reports, as well as the process of creating their own news articles and reports.

  • In the Introduction, students should contextualize the chosen topic, the relevance of this project, and the work's objective.

  • In the Development, the learned theory about news and reports, the methodology used in the analysis, the details of the practical activity, the results obtained, and a discussion about them should be explained.

  • In the Conclusion, students should summarize the main points of the work, highlight the learnings, and draw conclusions about the project.

  • In the Bibliography, students should indicate the sources used to carry out the work, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

• An oral presentation, which can be delivered live or recorded, about the work done. The presentation should follow the prepared script and should be clear and comprehensive.

Through this project, students will be able to identify and differentiate the characteristics of news and reports, develop research, writing, and presentation skills, as well as enhance socio-emotional competencies such as teamwork, time management, proactivity, and creative thinking.
