Introduction

Music, an indispensable form of expression, has been used as a tool to express emotions, tell stories and connect people across boundaries of time and space. With that in mind, the purpose of this project is to look into the role music plays in our society, and how it circulates and is consumed by us.

Musical circulation refers to the study of the means of producing, distributing and consuming music. It looks into the movement of musical pieces, ideas, styles, and artists across cultures, and the knowledge of music that is shared around the world. It also encompasses the comprehension of transmission mechanisms and cultural devices in the musical world.

Throughout this project, you will investigate different aspects of musical circulation, and not only understand the technicalities of how music circulates, but also get a glimpse into the social interactions that happen due to music.

The exploration of the circulation of music will illustrate the interaction between music and the communities it exists in - be it in the form of a concert, a personal listening experience with a pair of headphones, sharing it on social media or even learning music in an institution.

Context

Music is more than just a form of entertainment. It has the power to transcend borders, unite people from various cultures, and express deep emotions. The circulation of music and musical knowledge has a huge impact on our society, and our daily lives.

There are several aspects to the circulation of music. Firstly, there is the physical production of sound, which can take place through various means, ranging from the human voice to complex musical instruments and electronic devices. Secondly, there is the distribution and consumption of music.

In terms of distribution, music can be disseminated in various forms - a live concert performance, a physical record, a radio broadcast or even a musical score. Consumption of music can also be extremely varied - attending a concert, listening to music in one's car, listening to it at home or through streaming platforms are just a few ways.

Throughout this project, we will explore the circulation of music in different contexts, and look into how it plays out in different cultures, and in different societies.

Hands-on Activity: "Music has no Borders: The Musical Circulation Journey"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to have students investigate the concept of musical circulation through the journey of a piece of music or musical style from its creation to its distribution, consumption and the influence it has on the society and culture, while also working on both their hard and soft skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3-5 members, will trace the journey of a musical piece or style of their choosing, starting from its origins to how and where it is consumed across the globe, taking into account the different means of distribution and consumption as well as the impact of the music on society and culture.

The project will be divided into 3 major parts: Research, Presentation and Documentation.

1. Research

Students will begin by identifying a musical genre or a particular piece of music that they wish to trace. Students should research and document:

• The origin of the musical genre or piece chosen
• The process behind producing/creating the music (This can include the history of the composer, recording process, instruments involved etc.)
• The different distribution channels for the music (This could include live performances, physical records, radio broadcast, digital streaming etc.)
• The different modes of consumption
• The impact the music has had on society and culture across geographies (Students will have to analyse how this music influences, and is influenced by the local and global cultural contexts.)
• The role of cultural devices (such as concerts, radio, musical institutions, social media etc) in the circulation of the chosen piece/genre of music.

2. Presentation

Having completed their research, students must come up with a creative way to present their findings. This could take the form of a slide presentation, a video, a skit or even a song or a game. The presentation must depict the journey of the piece/genre of music from its origin point to the point of consumption and how it influences, and is influenced by, society and culture.

3. Documentation

A detailed write up of the research in a report format that includes introduction, body, conclusion and bibliography must be submitted by the students.

• Access to the internet for research purposes.
• Materials for presentation as needed for the format that the group chooses.

Step by step detailed procedure for carrying out the activity

1. Form a group of 3-5 members.
2. Choose a piece/genre of music to trace
3. Research on the origin, production, distribution, consumption and the cultural impact of the chosen piece or genre of music.
4. Prepare a presentable creative output showcasing your research.
5. Document your findings in the form of a detailed report.

Upon completing the hands-on part of the project, the students should work on a written document, a report, which will include:

1. Introduction: contextualise the theme and justify its real world applications and relevance along with the objective of this project.
2. Body: elaborate on the theory behind the concept of circulation of music, explain the activity you conducted in detail - mention the methodology followed (how you conducted the research and prepared for your presentation), and finally present and discuss your findings.
3. Conclusion: restate your main points, explicitly mention what you have learned and the inferences you have drawn from this entire project.
4. Bibliography: enlist sources that you have used for completing this project like books, webpages, videos etc. Students must apply their learnings of the circulation of music in a practical way and use this knowledge to understand how music travels, interacts with, and influences society and culture both locally and globally. This should be detailed in the report, along with what the journey reveals about musical circulation.
