Musical Styles and their Musicians

Context

Music is an artistic manifestation that permeates the history of humanity and expresses feelings, cultures, and historical contexts. Just as society has evolved, music has also undergone various transformations over time, leading to the emergence of different musical styles.

Studying and analyzing these styles allows us to better understand the diversity of musical history and how musicians and their works represent the society of their time. Therefore, understanding musical styles and their musicians is not only an experience of artistic appreciation but also a detailed look at history and global culture.

Importance

Beyond its role as an artistic expression, music exists as a reflection of its sociocultural context. It is a historical record that illustrates the cultural, political, and social evolution of humanity. Music can show us, for example, how war influenced 20th-century artists, how the hippie movement in the 60s influenced rock and pop, or how racial discrimination in the United States gave rise to hip hop.

Furthermore, studying musical styles and their musicians offers us a way to improve our musical appreciation skills. Learning about musical styles helps us understand what classifies a song into a particular genre, the specific elements of each style, and what a musician tries to convey through their art.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Reviving Musical Styles and their Musicians"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore, understand, and appreciate different musical styles and their influences on society by conducting extensive research and culminating in a creative presentation of the acquired knowledge.

Project Description

The project will be developed by groups of 3 to 5 students and will last approximately 4 weeks. Each group will be responsible for studying a specific musical style, its historical context, main artists, and influence on society. At the end of the period, each group will creatively present their knowledge about the chosen musical style.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Writing material
  • Art production materials (paints, papers, etc.)
  • Resources for producing a final product (could be a slide presentation, a video, a podcast, among others)

Activity Steps

  1. Group division and choice of musical style: each group will draw a musical style to explore. Ensure that the chosen styles are varied and comprehensive.

  2. Research and information compilation: groups must thoroughly research the chosen musical style, focusing on aspects such as origin, evolution, main artists, music characteristics, etc. It is important for students to seek to understand the relevance and impact of this musical style on society and culture.

  3. Presentation Preparation: groups must find a creative way to present the researched musical style. They should think of ways to engage the audience and make them appreciate the peculiarities of the chosen musical style. Presentations can take the form of musical performances, dramatizations, videos, podcasts, slide presentations, posters, among others.

  4. Presentation: each group will present their work to the class. In addition to presenting their work, each group should be prepared to answer questions from classmates and the teacher.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. Documentation of the research conducted, including bibliographical references.

  2. Written project document that includes an introduction (contextualization of the theme, relevance and real-world application of this project's objective), development (the theory behind the project's central theme, detailed explanation of the activity, indication of the methodology used, and discussion of the results obtained), conclusion (recap of the main points, explanation of the learnings obtained, and conclusions drawn about the project), and bibliography used.

  3. Final product of the creative presentation of the chosen musical style.

  4. Individual reflection, where each student will reflect on the experience, indicating what they liked the most, what they learned, what challenges they faced, and how they contributed to the group work.
