Culture is an element that defines us as human beings. It goes beyond simply having a set of traditions or practices and delves into the different ways we communicate, interact, and understand the world around us. Language, in itself, is an inherently cultural phenomenon and, consequently, learning a new language invites us to explore a new culture.

English, being the lingua franca of the modern world, offers an incredibly rich scenario of cultural aspects, with a vast variety of countries, each with its cultural peculiarities that are reflected in its way of using the language. When learning English, it is essential to understand these cultural nuances to use the language effectively and respectfully.

In this project, called 'Cultural Aspects of the English Language,' you will be introduced to cultural aspects of various Anglophone countries. Through this, the goal is to provide an immersive experience that allows a broad view of the cultural diversity of these countries and, consequently, develop effective communicative competence in English, addressing respect for differences and the appreciation of cultural diversity.

Our connection with the world around us, whether we are part of the culture in question or not, can significantly impact our understanding of various aspects of our lives. By understanding the differences and similarities between our cultures and English cultures, we can learn to see the world from multiple perspectives, a crucial skill in a globalized world.

Understanding cultural aspects of the English language is also useful for effective communication in international situations, whether on a trip abroad or in professional environments involving transnational interactions. Without this cultural sensitivity, we can be misunderstood, unintentionally offend, or find ourselves in disagreements due to cultural misunderstandings.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Exploring the Anglophone World: A Cultural Adventure

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to deepen students' knowledge of English-speaking countries' cultures, exploring aspects such as history, art, literature, music, cinema, festivities, expressions, gestures, and behaviors. Additionally, the activity aims to develop research skills, teamwork, creativity, and effective communication.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will choose an English-speaking country to study. These countries can be the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, among others.

The activity will be divided into two main parts. The first part will be research and study, and the second will be a cultural presentation.

In the first part, students will conduct in-depth research on the chosen country. They should focus on understanding the country's history and culture, including (but not limited to) aspects such as:

• Literature
• Music
• Cinema
• Festivities
• Cultural expressions and gestures
• Social behaviors
• Traditional food
• Art and artists
• Architecture
• National identity

Students should use various resources for research, such as books, videos, websites, podcasts, and articles. It is important that they find reliable sources and cite them correctly in their research.

In the second part of the project, each group will prepare a cultural presentation about the studied country, which can be in the form of a play, an art exhibition, a musical concert, a cultural fair, or any other form that can creatively represent the studied cultural aspects.

Required Materials

• Computer with internet access for research
• Materials for creating the cultural presentation (paper, pens, paints, musical instruments, costumes, etc., depending on the presentation format)
• Camera for recording the presentation

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. Formation of groups and choice of the country to be studied.
2. In-depth research on the culture of the chosen country.
3. Creation of a plan for the cultural presentation, detailing the format, the cultural aspects that will be presented, and the necessary materials.
4. Preparation of the cultural presentation, including rehearsals and creation of the necessary materials.
5. Recording of the cultural presentation.
6. Organization of the research and collected information into a written report.

Project Deliverables

The deliverables for this project are:

1. The recorded cultural presentation, lasting a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes.
2. The written report, with the format of Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.

Introduction:

Students should contextualize the chosen country, its relevance in the global scenario, the culture and the English language, and the project's objective.

Development:

In this section, students should detail the research conducted, explain the cultural presentation activity, indicate the methodology used in the research and preparation of the practical activity, and present and discuss the results and learnings obtained.

Conclusion:

Students should reflect on their main learnings, what the challenges were, surprises, and the most interesting aspects of the project.

Bibliography:

Students should list the sources used in the research, using the appropriate format for bibliographic citations.

In both formats (presentation and written report), students should address at least four different cultural aspects of the chosen country.
