With over 50 independent countries, Africa is home to a variety of peoples, religions, and customs that make up its rich cultural tapestry. The continent has one of the youngest populations in the world and a rich history dating back millennia. However, Africa has been the stage for numerous tensions and conflicts.

Understanding the reasons behind these tensions and conflicts is crucial for any discussion on international relations and peacebuilding. Tensions and conflicts in Africa have their roots in a variety of complex issues, including but not limited to ethnic and religious conflicts, territorial disputes, the legacy of colonialism, and economic inequalities.

Conflicts and tensions in Africa are not only relevant to those living on the continent but also have global implications. They affect international relations, global security, migration flows, and the world economy. Therefore, it is of great importance to understand these conflicts and tensions to grasp global geopolitics.

This project aims to assist in understanding this complex issue by building knowledge through the analysis of conflicts and tensions that diversify Africa and its importance in the current geopolitical scenario. Students will be guided to conduct a thorough investigation into a specific conflict, analyze the causes and impacts, and present their findings to their peers.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Analyzing Conflicts: A Journey Through Africa"

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to provide students with a deeper understanding of tensions and conflicts in Africa, their causes, impacts, and geopolitical implications. Students will explore a specific conflict in detail, focusing on the analysis of the socioeconomic, political, and historical factors that contributed to the emergence of this conflict.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will be assigned a specific conflict in Africa to investigate. They will be guided to conduct a detailed research on the conflict using a variety of resources, including books, academic articles, documentaries, news agency reports, among others.

These groups will present their findings in the form of an oral presentation and a written report. The presentation should include an overview of the conflict, its causes, impacts, international interventions (if any), and possible solutions. The report should also include a detailed analysis of the factors that contributed to the conflict and its geopolitical implications.

Activity Steps

1. Group Formation and Conflict Assignment: Students should divide into groups. Then, the teacher will assign each group a specific conflict in Africa to investigate.

2. Research: Each group should conduct a detailed research on the conflict. The research should focus on areas such as the causes of the conflict, the main agents involved, the consequences of the conflict for the people involved, and its geopolitical implications.

3. Presentation Preparation: Students will prepare a presentation to present their findings to the class. The presentation should be clear, informative, and interactive.

4. Report Preparation: Each group will prepare a detailed report describing their findings. The report should follow the format described in the project introduction.

5. Presentation and Discussion: Each group will present their findings to the class. After each presentation, there will be a question and answer session and discussion with the class.

Project Delivery

Groups should deliver two main items:

1. The oral presentation detailing their findings.

2. The written report. The report should include:

   • Introduction: Contextualization of the conflict.
   • Development: Detailed analysis of the conflict including its causes, consequences, and geopolitical implications.
   • Conclusion: Summary of the main points discussed in the report and conclusions about the conflict.
   • Bibliography: A list of sources used in the research.

Writing the report, in addition to complementing the learning obtained in the practical part of the project, will favor the development of writing, organization, and information synthesis skills.
