When studying Geography, it is essential to understand how populations are distributed and how they interact around the world. Populations are not equally distributed, and certain regions have a higher population concentration than others. The American population, the object of our study, has unique characteristics, and a deep analysis of its scenario can make a difference in the way we understand our world.

The Americas, made up of three continental masses (North America, Central America, and South America) has a rich cultural, ethnic, and demographic diversity. This is due, in part, to the various migratory movements that have happened throughout history. Whether by forced movements such as colonization and slavery or by volunteers in search of better living conditions, which generated a multicultural and diverse continent. In addition to being home to some of the world's largest economies, the Americas are also home to countries with great social and economic inequalities.

This study is of paramount importance, because through it it is possible to understand the migration flows and population distribution in urban and rural spaces. This analysis allows for a broader view of socioeconomic and cultural issues that influence the dynamics of the American population. In addition, it helps us understand the role of American countries in current geopolitics, their diplomatic relations, and existing conflicts.

Knowing the dynamics of the American population is understanding how the population is structured, understanding the cultural and economic differences that compose it, and how it influences and is influenced by the world. The American population is marked by great diversity, with vast social, cultural, and economic differences. Studying its composition and distribution is vital for understanding not just the Americas, but also the global dynamics of migration and development.

Project Objective

To understand the distribution and dynamics of the American population, analyzing aspects such as migratory movements, population growth, age profile, and the cultural, economic, and social influences of these processes.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will be responsible for analyzing a subregion of the Americas (ex: North America, Central America, South America). Students will research the population of these subregions, analyzing aspects such as: population growth, age profile, migratory movements (voluntary and forced), and the cultural, economic, and social influences of these processes.

The groups must also analyze the principal cities of their subregions, investigating aspects such as the distribution of the population (urban and rural) and the economy of these spaces.

• Internet access for additional research.
• Software for presentations (ex: PowerPoint, Google Slides).
• Materials to create graphs and maps (ex: design software or art supplies).

Detailed step-by-step for carrying out the activity

1. Divide the groups and define the subregion of the Americas that will be studied.
2. Research the population of the designated subregion, focusing on aspects such as population growth, age profile, and migratory movements.
3. Analyze the principal cities of the designated subregion, studying the distribution of the population (urban and rural) and the economy of these spaces.
4. Elaborate graphs and maps to illustrate the data collected during the research.
5. Create a presentation that summarizes the information collected, highlighting important aspects and conclusions.
6. Write a detailed report following the suggested structure (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography), which will complement the presentation.

Project Deliverables

There are two main deliverables in this project: a presentation and a written report.

The presentation should contain the explanation of the research carried out by the group, including graphs and maps that illustrate the collected data and analyses done. Each member of the group should present a part of the presentation to guarantee the participation of everyone.

The written report should follow the suggested structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. In the introduction, the students should contextualize the subregion studied and the importance of this study. In the development, the students should detail the research done, explain the theoretical concepts involved, and discuss the data and results obtained. In the conclusions, the students should reiterate the main points of the work and the lessons learned. The bibliography should list all of the sources used in the research.

The deliverables should complement each other – the presentation offers the general overview of the project, while the written report allows for a deeper understanding of the topics studied.
