Introduction

Africa is the second largest continent on Earth and has a rich environmental diversity. However, it faces numerous environmental problems caused by human action and climate variations. These problems have significant implications not only for Africa but for the entire world, as environmental issues are inherently global. To understand these problems and their consequences, we need to analyze Africa's situation through the lens of Geography.

In our journey, we will explore two main environmental problems affecting the African continent: desertification and lack of access to clean water. Desertification is a process where fertile land becomes desert, usually as a result of drought, poor agricultural practices, or deforestation. This is a major issue in North Africa, where the Sahara Desert continues to expand. The lack of access to clean water is another significant problem, affecting many countries south of the Sahara Desert.

Contextualization

African environmental problems have profound implications for humans and wildlife. Desertification results in lost habitats, threatening many species and compromising the livelihoods of the local population. The lack of clean water not only threatens human life but also limits economic and social development.

Studying these problems is not only relevant from an academic perspective but also has practical implications for real life. Desertification and lack of access to water are issues that affect millions of people in Africa and have real impacts on the global economy. Furthermore, as we are in an era of global environmental changes, studying these problems can provide important lessons for natural resource management worldwide.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Environmental Narratives of Africa: Desertification and Access to Clean Water"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to empower students to understand and effectively communicate about two of the main environmental problems facing the African continent: desertification and lack of access to clean water.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will create a multimedia presentation on the topics of desertification and access to clean water in Africa. The project will involve research, collaboration, and presentation skills. Students should structure the presentation in three parts:

1. Introduction and Importance of the Problems
2. Current State of the Problems in Africa (data, case studies)
3. Possible Solutions and Opportunities to improve the situation of desertification and access to clean water in Africa.

Required Materials

• Computer or tablet with internet access
• Presentation software (e.g. Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi)
• Research materials (books, scientific articles, documentaries, etc.)

Step by Step

1. Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.
2. Equal distribution of tasks among group members.
3. Research on desertification and access to clean water in Africa, using Recommended Resources and other reliable sources.
4. Group meeting to discuss research findings.
5. Structuring the presentation into three parts: introduction, current situation, and possible solutions.
6. Creating the presentation using the chosen presentation software.
7. At each stage, manage time to meet the one-month deadline.
8. Preparation for live presentation to the class and/or recording of the presentation for online submission.
9. Writing the final report, documenting your research process, the findings, and proposed solutions.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver:

1. The created multimedia presentation.
2. A written report, in report format, containing four parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Written Report Details:

1. Introduction: Contextualization of Africa's environmental problems, real-world relevance, and the project's objective.
2. Development: Theory behind desertification and water access problems, details about the activity, methodology used, and presentation and discussion of results.
3. Conclusions: Recap of the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn from the project.
4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources used to work on the project.

This way, the final delivery will be connected to the practical activity of creating the multimedia presentation and will be complemented by the written report documenting the studied theory, research process, findings, and proposed solutions.
