Introduction
The American continent is a space of indescribable natural richness, with diverse landscapes ranging from vast plains in the north, to dense forests in Central and South America, and the spectacular mountain ranges of the Andes. This biodiversity is due to variations in latitude, longitude, and active tectonism in some areas. There is also a great wealth of water resources, such as the Guarani Aquifer and the basins of the La Plata, Amazon, and Orinoco rivers.
Our goal with this project is to explore, observe, and understand the natural aspects of America: its geomorphology, biogeography, and climatology, as well as the importance of its water resources. We will learn to identify landscapes and associate them with the cartography of the region.
Contextualization
America, which includes North, Central, and South America, has an incredible variety of landscapes and ecosystems. The diversity of climate and vegetation that extends from the Arctic to the Equator and from there to Patagonia allows us to explore a variety of geographical issues.
Understanding these natural aspects is crucial to understanding the life and culture of the different peoples inhabiting the continent. These aspects also have a significant impact on the economy and politics of the nations of America. Therefore, studying the natural aspects of America is not just about learning about the land, it is also about learning about ourselves and the complex interaction between human beings and the natural world.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Explorers of America: A Geographic Journey"
Project Objective
This project aims to explore the natural aspects of America, covering topics where students will need to research, discuss, and present on the geomorphology, biogeography, climatology, and water resources of America.
Detailed Project Description
The groups (3 to 5 students) will become "exploration teams" where each team will be responsible for a specific region of America (North, Central, South). The team's task is to create a detailed multimedia presentation on the natural aspects of their designated region.
Presentations must be comprehensive and need to address the following topics:
- Geomorphology: Forms and characteristics of the region's terrain.
- Biogeography: Biodiversity and main ecosystems of the region.
- Climatology: Types of climate, their characteristics, and influences on the region.
- Water Resources: Main rivers, lakes, aquifers, etc., and their importance for the region and its people.
In addition, the presentation must include a detailed map of the region showing the terrain features, biodiversity, climate, and water resources.
Required Materials
- Computer with internet access for research.
- Slide editing program.
- Materials for creating maps (paper, pens, colors, etc.), if choosing to make them by hand.
Step-by-Step Project Execution
- Each group is assigned a region of America to explore.
- Groups must conduct detailed research from recommended sources and other reliable ones.
- Map the region, including geographical, biological, climatic, and water resource features.
- Create a slide presentation with the collected information.
- Prepare an oral presentation to accompany the slides.
- Project presentation to the class.
Project Submission
After the group presentations, each group must write a detailed report explaining the project production process and findings.
This document should include four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.
- Introduction: Should contextualize the designated region of America and the project's objective.
- Development: Should discuss the three natural aspects of the region (geomorphology, biogeography, and climatology), explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
- Conclusions: Should highlight the group's learnings and conclusions about the natural aspects of the studied region.
- Bibliography: Should indicate the research sources.
Remember, the presentation and report should be done collaboratively, reflecting teamwork and collective learning.
