Introduction

In this project, we will address a vital theme in contemporary history: Neocolonialism and Independence in Africa. Africa is a continent of rich cultural and ethnic diversity, which over the centuries has suffered external interventions that shaped its territories and influenced its sociocultural and economic dynamics. One of these periods of intense interference was during the 19th and early 20th centuries, known as the European colonization or neocolonialism period.

Neocolonialism was characterized by political and economic domination through colonization, in which several European nations established colonies in Africa. This period brought a significant change in the territorial, demographic, cultural, and economic distribution of the African continent. As a result, Africa was divided into several nation-states with unnatural borders that did not respect ethnic and cultural differences.

However, the 20th century marked the beginning of an intense movement for independence in many African countries. Despite independence, the influence of colonizers is still felt in various aspects of the lives of these countries, whether in the economy, politics, or culture. This theme is essential to understand the contemporary challenges that the African continent faces and to appreciate the persistence and resistance of its peoples.

Contextualization

Contemporary Africa is the result of a complex interaction between the impact of European colonialism and the diverse pre-existing ethnic, cultural, and political realities. The borders of today's African countries, for example, are largely a legacy of European occupation that divided the continent without considering the cultural and ethnic differences of its inhabitants. As a result, many current ethnic and political conflicts cannot be understood without reference to the colonial past.

The independence of African countries in the 20th century was a moment of great change and hope. However, it also marked the beginning of new challenges, as the newly independent countries had to deal with the legacy of colonialism and build a post-colonial identity. The history of independence is, therefore, a story of achievements and challenges, victories and difficulties. Studying it allows us to understand not only the past but also the present of the African continent and the challenges it faces in the modern world.

Therefore, this investigation into Africa, Neocolonialism, and Independence is of utmost importance for us to understand the complexity and particularities of the African continent. It helps us broaden our perspective and respect for such a rich and diverse culture, as well as reminding us that Africa is not a country, but a continent of 54 countries.

Activity Title: "Neocolonialism and Independence in Africa - Illustrating History"

Project Objective

With this activity, we aim to facilitate students' understanding of the theme of Neocolonialism and Independence in Africa through the creation of a visual timeline. The ultimate goal is for them to visualize and understand the sequence of important events that led to the current panorama of the African continent.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students must work in groups of three to five people. They will research, analyze, and present information about neocolonialism and independence in Africa. The presentation should be in the form of a visual timeline, highlighting the main historical events, leaders, and countries involved.

Key points to be highlighted in the timeline include:

• The situation in Africa before neocolonialism.
• The beginning of European exploration and colonization in Africa (Neocolonialism).
• The Berlin Conference (1884-85) and the division of Africa among European countries.
• Independence and decolonization movements in Africa.
• The challenges faced by African countries post-independence.

Required Materials

• Large paper for the timeline
• Colored markers, colored pencils, pens, etc.

Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

1. Formation of groups of three to five students.

2. Research on the key points mentioned above. Each group should seek varied and reliable sources of information.

3. Schematization of the timeline. Students should divide into periods (pre-colonization, during colonization, independence, and post-independence) and list the main events of each period.

4. Creation of the visual timeline. Students should use various materials to make the timeline attractive and informative. The timeline should have images and/or drawings representing the main events.

5. Presentation of the timeline to the class. Each group should explain their timeline, highlighting the most relevant events and what they learned from the research.

Project Delivery

The delivery of this project will be in two parts. The first is the presentation of the timeline to the class. The second is the submission of a written report, which must meet the following requirements:

1. Introduction: Students must provide a brief explanation of the theme and the justification for the choice of events included in the timeline.

2. Development: Students must explain in detail the main events of the timeline, indicating the methodology used for research and the creation of the timeline.

3. Conclusions: Students should express their learnings, the difficulties encountered during the project, and the conclusions drawn on the theme.

4. Bibliography: Should include all research sources used by the group, whether books, websites, videos, or other sources.

This report must be submitted one week after the presentation of the timeline.
