Hands-on Activity: "Algebra Express - The Game"

Project Objective

The main idea of this project is to create a board game where players need to solve algebraic expressions in order to progress. This game will not only enhance students’ skills in solving algebraic expressions, but will also encourage teamwork, effective communication, and time management.

Detailed Project Description

The groups, formed by 3 to 5 students, must create the game's design, rules, and challenges from scratch. The challenges will be based on solving algebraic expressions and may vary in difficulty according to their position on the board.

Materials

  1. Cardboard or thick paper for the base of the board.
  2. Colored pens, pencils, or paints for the decoration of the board.
  3. Pawns from old games, playdough, buttons, or any small item that can be used as game pieces.
  4. Blank cards to write the challenges on.
  5. Stopwatch or clock to manage time for the games.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Board Design: Start the project by designing the game board on the cardboard or thick paper. The board design can be creative and thematic, as long as it has numbered spaces on which the pawns will move.

  2. Rules Creation: As a group, decide the rules of the game. As a suggestion, players could roll a dice and the number rolled would indicate how many spaces the player can move forward. If you land on a challenge space, you must solve the algebraic expression to continue in the game.

  3. Challenge Creation: On the blank cards, write algebraic expressions that will be the challenges for the game. When landing on a challenge space, the player needs to solve the algebraic expression that corresponds to that space. If they get it right, they continue normally in the game. If they get it wrong, they lose a turn.

  4. Play and Adjust: Play the game a few times with your group, to see if the rules are working and to adjust anything that is needed.

Project Submission and Report

The final submission of the project should be a video of up to 15 minutes where the groups present the game, the rules, and demonstrate a game being played. This video should be complemented with a report containing:

  1. Introduction: Contextualize the relevance of learning algebraic expressions, relating it to the real world and the objectives of the project.
  2. Development: Explain the theory of algebraic expressions, how it was applied to the project, and detail the whole process of creating the game, highlighting the methodology used and the results obtained.
  3. Conclusions: Summarize the main points of the work, the learning outcomes and the conclusions about the project.
  4. References: List all the sources that helped build the project, the rules, and the challenges of the game.
