Activity Title: Building and Exploring Quadrilaterals

Project Objective:

The main objective of this project is to apply mathematical concepts related to quadrilateral angles in the construction of a model divided into various learning and practice phases.

Project Description:

In this project, groups will build physical models of different types of quadrilaterals using toothpicks and modeling clay. Additionally, they will also explore the properties of angles, identifying congruent triangles within the quadrilaterals and calculating the sum of the internal angles.

Materials Needed:

  • Toothpicks
  • Modeling clay
  • Ruler
  • Protractor
  • Pencil and paper for notes

Step by Step:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Each group should choose four types of quadrilaterals to model (for example, square, rectangle, rhombus, and trapezoid).

  3. With the help of the ruler, students should measure the toothpicks to have appropriate sizes for the shapes they will create.

  4. Using the toothpicks and modeling clay, build the models of the chosen quadrilaterals.

  5. Identify and mark the internal angles of each quadrilateral with the colors of the modeling clay.

  6. Use the protractor to measure each angle. Record the measurements.

  7. Prove that the sum of the internal angles of each quadrilateral is equal to 360 degrees.

  8. Now, try to divide some of your quadrilaterals into two triangles. Examine the relationship between the angles of the triangles and the angles of the quadrilaterals.

  9. Record your observations and conclusions.

The project is expected to last one month, indicating an average commitment of 5 to 10 hours per student.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of this project, students must produce a report that includes the following sections:

1. Introduction: Provide context for the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

2. Development: Explain the theory behind quadrilateral angles, the activity carried out, the methodology used, and the results obtained. Include the measurements of the angles found and how the sum of the internal angles was verified, as well as the relationship between the angles of the triangles and the angles of the quadrilaterals.

3. Conclusion: Conclude the work by summarizing its main points, the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.

4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources consulted for the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This project goes beyond just assessing students' knowledge in mathematics; it also serves as a tool to enhance socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
