A median is a central concept in statistics and is one of the measures of central tendency, which also include mean and mode. The median of a list of numbers is the value that appears in the middle when the list is arranged in ascending or descending order. If the list has an even number of elements, then the median is the average of the two middle numbers.

For example, consider the following list of numbers: [3, 7, 5, 13, 20, 23, 39, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29]. In ascending order, this list becomes: [3, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 20, 23, 23, 23, 23, 29, 39, 40, 56]. Thus, the median of this list is 23, which is the value in the middle when the list is sorted.

Finding the median might seem like a simple computation, but understanding its significance and appropriately applying it requires critical thinking and a broad understanding of its implications.

Contextualization

The median is a valuable measure because it is unaffected by outliers. For instance, if we were measuring income across a sample of individuals, the mean income could be heavily skewed by one or two very wealthy individuals, whereas the median would remain stable. This illustrates that the median provides a more representative measure for non-uniform distributions, such as income distributions.

For instance, in assessing students' performance in a classroom, the median could offer a more accurate view, as it would neutralize the impact of extreme outliers that may not be reflective of the students' overall performance.

Comprehending the idea of median, along with mean and mode, can greatly assist us in accurately interpreting statistical data and making informed decisions.

Hands-on Activity

Activity Title: Calculating the Median of a Neighborhood

Project Aim

This project aims to deeply understand the mathematical concept of median and its practical application while developing teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

Detailed Description of the Project

The students will conduct a survey to collect data on an agreed topic such as the number of people living in each household within a neighborhood or the ages of the residents, or any other relevant variable. They will then calculate the median of this collected data.

This activity will engage two subjects: Mathematics, for the understanding and calculation of the median, and Geography, for the analysis and understanding of neighborhood demographics.

The project will be done in groups of 3 to 5 students with an approximate timeframe of two weeks.

Required Materials

  • Notebooks or sheets to jot down the collected data.
  • Computer or calculator for computations.
  • Spreadsheet software (such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets) to organize and analyze the collected data.

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Planning the survey: Students will plan a survey on their decided topic of median, such as the number of residents in each household or the age of residents in the neighborhood.
  2. Collecting the data: Students will survey the neighborhood and collect data.
  3. Organizing the data: Students will organize the gathered data in a spreadsheet, arranging it in ascending order.
  4. Calculating the median: Students will compute the median of the collected data, using the method taught to them in class.
  5. Analyzing the data: Finally, the students will interpret the result obtained and discuss how the median may provide a different insight, in comparison to the mean.

Project Deliverables

The students are required to submit a final report which will include their conducted survey, collected data, performed calculations, and an analysis of the results. The report should follow the structure provided below:

  1. Introduction: The students will define the topic, briefly discuss the relevance of the topic and the aims of their project.
  2. Body: The students will elaborate on their survey plan, data collection, data organization, median calculation, and data analysis in detail. There should be clarity regarding the theory of median and its practical application.
  3. Conclusion: The students will summarize the main points of the project, what they learned through this experience and how these lessons can be used in future contexts.
  4. References: The students will provide a list of all the sources that they have referred to while performing this project.

While drafting the report, the students must keep in mind that it acts as a supporting document for their practical exercise. That is, the report must be written in a manner that enables any reader to understand their project, the methods used to conduct it, and the achieved results.
