Sets are a collection of items or objects that are grouped based on a common characteristic or property. For example, the set of all students in the classroom or the set of all books in the library. Understanding sets and their theory is fundamental to many aspects of mathematics, including logic, algebra, probability, statistics, among others.
It is common to refer to things in terms of "types" or "groups," and these are just other names for sets. In the real world, sets play an important role in data organization and analysis. For example, companies can use sets to group their customers and guide their marketing strategies.
Sets are also used in many other disciplines, including science, technology, and even the arts. For example, in computer science, sets are used for data structuring; in physics, they are used to describe and manipulate concepts like spaces and dimensions. In music, sets are used for analysis and composition.

Project Objective
This project aims to learn about Set Theory in a playful and interdisciplinary way. The disciplines of mathematics and arts will be integrated to promote more meaningful learning. Additionally, the project will also provide the opportunity to develop technical and socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking.
Detailed Project Description
In this project, students will create an illustrated "textbook" about Set Theory. Each group of 3 to 5 students will have the freedom to choose the format of the book, but they must ensure that they cover the required content and use visual means to aid in understanding the topic.
The book should cover the following topics:
- Definition of set and element of a set
- Relations of belonging and not belonging
- Relations of being contained and not being contained
- Operations with sets: union, intersection, difference, and complement
Students should explore each theoretical concept, providing definitions, examples, and illustrations. All content must be corroborated by reliable sources.
Necessary Materials
- Paper (plain and colored)
- Pencils, pens, markers
- Scissors, glue
- Computer with internet access (for research)
Step by Step
- Grouping and Planning (3 hours): Organize the student groups and ask them to plan the project. They should divide the functions and topics to be covered in the book.
- Research and Script (5 hours): Students should research Set Theory using the indicated resources and also look for others. After the research, they should create a script of the content that will be covered in the book.
- Drawing and Writing (8 hours): Start building the book. Students should balance text and illustrations, ensuring that the content is clear and well-represented, paying attention to the language and aesthetics of the booklet.
- Review (2 hours): Students should do a general review of the book, correcting grammatical errors, checking if all topics were covered, and improving the content if necessary.
- Presentation (2 hours): Each group should present their book to the class, explaining their stylistic and pedagogical choices and discussing the content.
After completing the practical project, students should write a report on the project including four main sections:
- Introduction: Contextualization of the theme and explanation of the project's objective.
- Development: Detailed explanation of the project steps, from research to the construction of the book and the final presentation. Additionally, students should address set theory, explaining the concepts worked on and how the book helped in understanding them.
- Conclusions: Discussion of the results obtained, learnings, and difficulties encountered throughout the project.
- Bibliography: References that were used for the creation of the book.
Students should submit the report along with the book.
Students will be evaluated considering the clarity of the explanation of the concepts, the quality of the presentation, the quality of the textbook, the collaboration and participation in the group, and the submission of the report.
