Percentages are an extremely important mathematical tool and are used in a wide variety of situations in everyday life. Percentages are a way to express a number as a fraction of 100. It is an expressive tool, widely used in areas such as economics, sciences, and statistics, as it allows describing proportional relationships in a very simple and intuitive way.

Percentages can be used to calculate the proportion of a specific value in relation to the whole. For example, if you take a test with 10 questions and answer 7 correctly, you have answered 70% of the test. Or, if in a group of 100 people, 25 are women, then we say that the percentage of women in the group is 25%.

Calculating percentages is a very common way to express a ratio, so understanding how to manipulate percentages properly is basic knowledge for any citizen. Being able to calculate percentages means being able to understand and communicate essential information in various everyday situations.

Theme Contextualization

In the real world, percentages are used in a myriad of situations. They are used in tax calculations, in loan and investment interest rates, in store discounts, in growth rates, and many other situations. Almost all financial decisions require some knowledge of percentages. The importance of understanding percentages is of great relevance because, without it, you may end up making ill-informed financial decisions that can have negative long-term ramifications.

Furthermore, percentages play an important role in statistics. When you read information about the prevalence of a disease, for example, this information is often expressed in terms of a percentage. Saying that 1 in 4 people (or 25%) suffers from a specific disease is a much more intuitive and easy-to-understand way than saying that 0.25 of individuals are affected.

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is for students to understand and apply percentage concepts in a supermarket shopping scenario. Students will create a hypothetical shopping situation, considering discounts and percentage increases. They will also have to analyze prices and discounts to decide which product is the most economical. Additionally, the project aims to develop socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, time management, and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will receive a list of products (with prices) to buy at a "supermarket." The challenge will be to make purchases considering a set budget and a series of applicable discounts and percentage increases on some products.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group will receive a list of products with their respective prices.
  3. Each group will also receive a list of discounts and percentage increases that can be applied to certain products.
  4. Give each group a fixed budget to spend.
  5. Each group must plan their purchases to make the most of their budget, considering the discounts and percentage increases.
  6. After planning the purchases, each group must calculate the total spent and compare it to the budget.
  7. Students must record the entire process, including the decisions made, the calculations performed, and the problems encountered.
  8. Finally, students must write a detailed report on the activity.

Project Deliverables

The project will be delivered in the form of a written document, which should be divided into four main sections:

  1. Introduction: This section should contextualize the importance and application of percentages, as well as the project's objective.

  2. Development: Here, the group must explain the problem that was presented, the decisions made during the purchase planning, and how they calculated the discounts and percentage increases. The group must also discuss the challenges encountered during the work and how they overcame them.
