Practical Activity: Project 'Average 2'
Activity Title: Merge Average
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to apply the knowledge acquired in class about measures of central tendency, especially the average, in a real and practical scenario. In a group of 3 to 5 students, you will conduct a survey, calculate the average for different data sets, and analyze the results. Additionally, you should work together to produce a detailed report on the research, the methodology applied, and the results obtained.
Detailed Project Description
To carry out this project, you must first choose two different topics to conduct research on. For example, you can choose to research the average time students spend studying per day and the average grades obtained. After choosing the topics, you should create a questionnaire, apply it to a group of people, and collect the data.
With the collected data, you should calculate the average, mode, and median for each topic and analyze the results. Additionally, you should discuss whether the average is a fair representation of the data set in each case and show your calculations and reasoning.
This project will integrate two subjects: Mathematics, through the study and application of measures of central tendency, and Portuguese Language, in the production of the report.
Necessary Materials
- Paper and pen to create the questionnaire
- Calculator (optional)
- Computer or laptop with spreadsheet software (such as Excel or Google Sheets)
- Bibliographic references (books, websites, videos) on measures of central tendency
Step by Step:
Step 1: Form a group of 3 to 5 students
Step 2: Choose two different topics to research
Step 3: Create a questionnaire related to these topics
Step 4: Apply the questionnaire to a group of people (at least 20 people) and collect the data
Step 5: For each topic, calculate the average, mode, and median using the collected data
Step 6: Analyze the results. Is the average a fair representation of the data set in each case? Justify your answer
Step 7: Prepare a report with the results and analyses (details below)
Step 8: Review and edit the report. All group members should participate in this review to ensure that the report is complete and coherent
Step 9: Make a final presentation of the project to the class
Project Deliverables and How They Connect to the Suggested Activities:
Written Report:
The report should be written according to the following topics:
-
Introduction: Contextualize the theme, its relevance, and application in the real world. State what the two chosen topics are and the research objective
-
Development: Explain the theory of measures of central tendency and the average. Detail the research: what is the questionnaire, how it was applied, how many people participated. How to calculate the average, mode, and median. Show the calculations and results obtained in tables and/or graphs
-
Conclusion: Conclude the work by reiterating your main points, explaining the learnings obtained, the conclusions drawn about the project, and what you discovered through the research
-
Bibliography: Indicate the sources consulted for the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
It is expected that students, at the end of the project, present a written report in Portuguese, explaining the process and the project results
The estimated duration for the complete project, considering data collection, calculation of measures of central tendency, report writing, and preparation for presentation, is more than 12 hours per student.
