Solving the Mystery of Pi and Rational Exponents Square Roots

Project Goal

The purpose of this activity is to provide students with an opportunity to become familiar with the properties of exponents, particularly those involving rational exponents, through a fun and hands-on approach. In addition, the activity aims to develop important socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, time management, problem solving and communication.

Detailed project description

Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 to solve a fictional mystery. The mystery will center around the concepts of exponents with rational exponents and properties of exponents. Through a series of riddles and clues, students will have to apply their knowledge of these topics to arrive at the final solution.

Materials needed

  • Pens and notebooks for taking notes
  • Books, videos and web pages for consultation
  • Text editing software for the final writing of the report

Step by step instructions for carrying out the activity

  1. Each group will receive a series of "riddle cards" containing mathematical clues to be solved. Each of these riddles is related to the properties of exponents and rational exponents.
  2. Groups should solve the puzzles, using their mathematical skills and knowledge as well as research resources, to find the correct solution.
  3. After solving all the riddles, the groups will have to join the solutions together to form the final answer that will solve the mystery.
  4. At the end of solving the mystery, each group should write a report detailing the process of solving the mystery, using the proposed format: Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography used.
  5. The activity should take approximately one month to complete, with a total of five to ten hours of work per student.

Connection between Activity and Project Delivery

Students will not only have to solve the mystery, but also document their entire process in a report. When writing the Introduction, students should contextualize the topic, its relevance and application in the real world, as well as explain the purpose of this project. In Development, students should present the theories behind the project's core topics, explain the activity and methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained. The Conclusions should contain a summary of the main points of the project, the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn from the project. Finally, in the Bibliography, students should indicate the sources used to work on the project.
