The median is a value that divides a set of data into two equal parts. When we organize a set of data in ascending order, the median is the number that is exactly in the middle of the set. If the data set contains an even number of observations, the median is the average of the two middle numbers.

In this project, we will explore the median in more detail. We will learn how to calculate the median, understand its importance, and its application in real-life situations.

The median is a measure of central tendency that provides us with a view of the center of the data set. The median is particularly useful in situations where the data set contains large variations or outliers. In these cases, the mean can be distorted by extreme values, while the median, resistant to extreme values, can provide a better representation of the center of the data set.

In real life, the median is used in various areas such as economics, psychology, sociology, medicine, among others. For example, in economics, the median income is often used to understand the distribution of wealth in a society. In medicine, the median survival time of patients with a certain disease can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment.

Project Objective:

To understand the concept of median and its practical application, applying it in the analysis of sequences of numbers related to music.

Detailed Project Description:

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, the students should examine a music score of their choice. Each musical note will be associated with a numerical value (for example, the note C could be represented by the number 1, D by 2, and so on).

The group's task will be to list all the notes of the music in order of appearance and calculate the median of these numerical values. In this way, they will find "the median note" of the music, which can be used to discuss concepts such as balance and central point in musical composition.

Required Materials:

  • Music score chosen by the group
  • Pencil and paper or a spreadsheet for calculations and notes
  • Online resources for understanding the positioning of musical notes

Detailed Step-by-Step

Step 1: Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.

Step 2: Choose a music score. The group can choose the music of their preference: the more notes it has, the greater the challenge!

Step 3: Associate a numerical value with each musical note. Remember, the numbering must be consistent for all notes throughout the music.

Step 4: List the notes of the music in the order they appear in numerical format. This will be your data sequence to be analyzed.

Step 5: Calculate the median of the sequence. Remember: if the number of notes is even, the median will be the average of the two central values.

Step 6: From the median found, identify which musical note it represents.

After the practical activity, the group should prepare a detailed report, containing the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Describe the project's objective, the relevance of the median concept, and how it can be applied in the real world, specifically in music.

  2. Development: Discuss the theory of the median and how you applied it in the project, explaining in detail the methodology used. Present the result of the median calculation and indicate the corresponding musical note.

  3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the project, the acquired learnings, and the conclusions drawn. How does the median apply to music?

  4. Bibliography: List all sources from which you obtained information to carry out the project, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

The activity must be completed, and the report must be submitted one week after the start date.
