Context

Algebraic expressions are the foundation of mathematics that we use daily, even without realizing it. They are the way we represent different mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponentiation, and roots. Learning to manipulate these expressions is an essential skill for those who want to understand mathematics and its applications.

Algebraic expressions are composed of numbers, variables (letters representing unknown numbers), operators (such as +, -, *, /, ^), and parentheses. The goal is to learn to deal with this complex combination of elements and solve the expressions, that is, find the numerical value they represent.

With algebraic expressions, you can see mathematics in action in many things you do in your daily life. Imagine you are planning a party and need to buy soda. You can use algebraic expressions to find out how many liters of soda you need to buy, depending on how many people are attending the party. Algebraic expressions are also used in many fields, from engineering to economics, to model and solve complex problems.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Time for the Show with Algebraic Expressions!

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to create an educational board game about algebraic expressions. The game will help understand and apply the manipulation of algebraic expressions in a playful and fun context. In addition, students will also learn to work in teams, manage time, and develop communication skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, must create a board game that includes problems with algebraic expressions to be solved during the game. The game should follow the theme of a 'mathematical journey,' where players advance on the board by correctly solving the expressions.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or other material to create the game board
  • Paper and colored pens to write the questions and create the board design
  • Dice and markers for the players
  • Computer with internet access for research

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Research: Research educational board games and how they are built. Analyze the different elements that make up a game and what makes a game attractive and educational at the same time.

  2. Board Creation: Draw the board on cardboard. Be creative! The board can have any shape - it doesn't have to be a rectangle or a grid.

  3. Question Creation: Write algebraic expressions on pieces of paper. The expressions should vary in difficulty. When players land on a space, they select a question and must solve it to advance.

  4. Game Rules: Write the game rules. Decide how players will move their markers (e.g., by rolling a die), how they select questions, and how they advance in the game by solving the expressions.

  5. Game Testing: Play the game with your group. Adjust the rules or questions as needed.

  6. Project Report Preparation: Prepare a group report detailing the game creation process, the methodology used, the decisions made, and the challenges encountered.

Project Delivery

The project will be divided into two main parts for delivery:

  1. Board Game: The physical board game created by the group. It will be evaluated for originality, applicability of algebraic expressions, and clarity in the game rules.

  2. Report: The report written by the group should have the following sections:
