Basic Second Degree Equation

Contextualization

Second-degree equations, a fundamental field of algebra, make up one of the basic tools of mathematics used to solve various problems, both in theoretical and applied fields. Any equation of the form ax² + bx + c = 0, where a, b, and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0, is called a second-degree equation.

Why is it called 'second degree'? The 'degree' of a polynomial equation is related to the highest exponent of the terms with variables. In this case, the variable x is squared (x²), hence it is the second degree.

Importance of Second-Degree Equations

Second-degree equations are used in various areas of knowledge, such as physics, engineering, economics, and even in medicine. Being able to solve and understand this type of equation is at the core of many calculations that allow the construction of bridges, the development of medications, the analysis of economic behaviors, and even the launching of rockets into space!

For example, in physics, the laws of motion are often expressed in terms of second-degree equations, which describe the trajectory of a freely falling object or the motion of a pendulum. In economics, second-degree equations can model production costs, indicate the maximum quantity of products to be produced at a minimum cost, allowing companies to optimize production and maximize profits.

Practical Activity: Unraveling Parabolas - The Quadratic Equations Game

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide a playful and cooperative learning experience about second-degree equations, favoring, in addition to technical learning, the development of socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, time management, communication, and creative thinking.

The idea is to create a game that involves solving second-degree equations, where the correct answer will advance the game's story, while errors will be penalized with obstacles in the game.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students will create a board game (or a digital game if they have the skills) called 'Unraveling Parabolas - The Quadratic Equations Game'.

At each stage of the game, players will have to solve a second-degree equation that will guide the next stage of the game. The game should be structured with an engaging plot, driven by the solutions to the equations.

In addition to solving equations, students will have to theoretically explain in each stage of the game why that particular second-degree equation is being used and how they arrived at the solution, making the activity didactic and informative.

Materials Needed

  1. Cardboard for the base of the board game
  2. Colored paper, pens, colored pencils, glitter, and other artistic materials for decoration
  3. Small pieces to represent the players
  4. Dice
  5. Computer and software for creation (if opting for a digital game)
  6. Textbook, Internet, and other study materials for research and theoretical foundation

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Organize the group and together define the game's plot. It can be fantasy, adventure, mystery, etc. Be creative!

  2. For each stage of the plot, define a second-degree equation that players need to solve to advance in the game.

  3. In each stage, in addition to the equation, explain why that equation is being used and how to reach the solution.

  4. Draw the board's path based on the plot stages and equations.

  5. Decorate the board and create the player pieces.

  6. Test the game to ensure everything works properly and that the sequence of equations makes sense in the game's plot.

  7. Make necessary improvements and adjustments to the game.

Project Deliverables and Document Writing

At the end of the project, students must deliver:

  1. The board game 'Unraveling Parabolas - The Quadratic Equations Game';

  2. A detailed report on the project, explaining the game's plot, how second-degree equations were used in each stage, how they solved those equations, and what were the group's learnings and challenges. The report should contain the following topics:

    • Introduction: Provide context on what a second-degree equation is, its history, and its importance. Present the project's objective and how the game fits into this objective.
