Contextualization

Hockey is a sport that has its origins in very ancient times, dating back over 4,000 years. Although the current form as we know it has its origins established in the 19th century in England, it has its roots in antiquity, with ball and stick games practiced in Asia and Europe.

There are several variants of the sport, but the most well-known are ice hockey and field hockey. Both involve two teams trying to direct a ball (in the case of field hockey) or a puck (in the case of ice hockey) into the opponent's goal, using sticks.

Introduction

In this project, we will delve into the wonderful world of hockey, understanding its fundamentals, rules, and the history of this dynamic and strategic sport. We will address topics such as the beginning of hockey, its development over the years, the basic rules of the game, the difference between ice hockey and field hockey, and the social and cultural impact of this sport on the world.

Furthermore, we will understand the importance of practicing sports for physical and mental health, correlating the practice of hockey with the development of important socio-emotional skills, such as teamwork, persistence, and discipline. We will also explore the physics involved in this sport, discussing concepts such as friction, inertia, and momentum.

Practical Activity: "Exploring the World of Hockey"

Project Objective

The objective of the project is to deeply explore the history and rules of hockey, both on the field and on the ice, as well as to present the basic physics concepts involved in the dynamics of the game.

Students should research, understand, and present theoretical concepts related to the sport, as well as learn about the importance of teamwork through practical activities.

Project Description

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and should take more than twelve hours per student to complete. This way, students will have enough time to research, discuss the concepts, plan the practical activities, and prepare the presentation and final report.

Required Materials

For the project to be carried out, the necessary materials are:

  • Internet access for research.
  • Material for notes (notebook, pens, pencils, post-its, etc.)
  • Adequate space for practicing physical activities related to hockey.
  • Hockey equipment (sticks, ball or puck, team vests, etc.)
  • Material for the presentation (poster paper, computer for PowerPoint presentations, etc.)

Project Steps

  1. Theoretical Research: Students should research the history of hockey, the differences between field and ice hockey, the basic rules and game strategy, and also the physics concepts involved in the sport (such as friction, inertia, and momentum). They should take notes and discuss what they have learned with the group.

  2. Physical Activities: Students should practice the sport by playing a field hockey match. During the game, they should try to apply the rules and strategies they have learned, as well as observe the physics concepts in action.

  3. Preparation of the Presentation: Based on what they have learned and observed during the research and physical activities, students should prepare a comprehensive presentation on hockey. The presentation should include information about the history and rules of the sport, the physics concepts, and the observations made during the game.

  4. Writing the Report: In parallel with the preparation of the presentation, students should write a detailed report on the project. The report should include the introduction and contextualization of hockey, the project's development (methodology, activities carried out, and results), and the conclusions drawn.

Project Delivery

In addition to the presentation, the final report is the main deliverable of this project. In it, students must structure the work done. The report should be divided into four sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography:

  1. Introduction: The group should contextualize hockey, its relevance, and real-world application, as well as present the project's objective.
  2. Development: The research process, the theoretical understanding of hockey, the description of the practical activities carried out, and the results obtained should be detailed. The theory and physics behind hockey should be discussed, as well as its historical and cultural aspects.
  3. Conclusions: Students should summarize the main points, highlight the learnings, and conclude on the practical application of what was learned.
  4. Bibliography: List the sources used for the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
