Hockey is a sport that, although not so popular in some countries, is of great importance in many others. There are different modalities of hockey such as ice hockey, field hockey, roller hockey and indoor hockey, each with its own characteristics and specific rules. Deeply rooted in countries like Canada and Russia (ice) and India and Pakistan (field), hockey is more than a sport, it is part of the cultural identity of these nations.

Besides its cultural relevance, hockey is a sport that encourages a number of important skills in its practitioners. On a physical level, it requires endurance, dexterity with specific equipment (stick and puck or ball), motor coordination, speed and agility. In a socioemotional dimension, the practice of hockey involves teamwork, collaboration, communication, strategy, problem solving, respect for rules and healthy competitiveness.

Introduction

Before entering the field or hockey ring, it is essential to know the history, rules and culture around this sport. The first part of this project will focus on these aspects. Each group member will be responsible for researching and presenting a specific topic related to hockey. Thus, the group as a whole will have a more complete and diverse view on the subject.

The second phase of the project will be related to the practice of hockey. A mini hockey competition between the groups will be created. To do so, students will need to devise strategies, train and put into practice everything they have learned. In addition to the competition, each group will also prepare a fun presentation on hockey to be presented to the class.

At the end of the project, each group will prepare a detailed report on the research process, lessons learned, challenges, achievements and discoveries about hockey. This report will be the basis for the final evaluation of the project.

Practical Activity

Title of the activity: Mini-Hockey Match and Cultural Show

Objective of the project:

The objective of this project is to provide students with a broad understanding of the sport of hockey, its rules, history and different variants. The project consists of two parts: the organization and participation in a mini-hockey tournament and the elaboration of a cultural exhibition about hockey.

Detailed description of the project:

Part 1: Mini-Hockey Tournament

Each group will be a "team" in the mini-hockey tournament. All groups will participate, regardless of the number of members (3 to 5 students). The tournament will take place in the school gym, with 10-minute matches. Students will need to plan their strategies, train and apply everything they have learned about hockey in practice.

Part 2: Cultural Exhibition

Each team will be responsible for developing a presentation (which can be a poster, a slide presentation, a video, a dramatization, etc.) on one of the following subtopics:

• History of hockey (general or of a specific modality)
• Hockey rules (general or of a specific modality)
• Hockey around the world (how the sport is played and experienced in different countries)

Students can use their creativity to present the knowledge they have acquired in a fun and informative way.

Required materials:

• Small ball for mini-hockey matches.
• Hockey sticks adapted to the students' age and size.
• Vests to identify the teams.
• Materials to prepare the presentation (paper, paint, computer, etc.).

Step-by-step details for carrying out the activity:

1. Formation of groups and presentation of the project.
2. Study on hockey: rules, history, variants. Each group should focus on a subtheme for the cultural exhibition.
3. Preparation for the tournament: training, strategy development, discussion of rules.
4. Mini-hockey tournament.
5. Elaboration of the cultural exhibition: definition of the format, preparation of the content, rehearsals (if necessary).
6. Cultural exhibition.
7. Preparation of the final project report.

Project Deliverables:

1. Participation in the Mini-Hockey Tournament: Assessment of the application of the rules and strategy used.

2. Cultural Exhibition: Students must present the chosen subtheme clearly, creatively and informatively.

3. Final Report: The report must be written in a group and contain the following topics:

   • Introduction: Presentation of the theme and objectives of the project.
   • Development: Detailed description of the project, explaining the steps taken, the difficulties encountered, the solutions proposed and the results obtained.
   • Conclusions: Reflection on the learning acquired, the practical application of the knowledge and the teamwork.
   • References: Sources of the materials consulted for the project.

The report must be submitted within one month from the start of the project. The report is a crucial part of the project, as it is through it that it will be possible to evaluate the students' progress and learning, as well as their research, writing, problem solving and teamwork skills.
