Theoretical Introduction

Electric power is the rate at which energy is transferred or transformed in an electrical circuit. It is a measure of how quickly electrical energy is converted into another type of energy (such as heat, mechanical energy, etc.). This is especially important when we talk about household appliances, which convert electrical energy into another type of energy to perform useful functions.

We can calculate electric power using the formula P=V.I, where P is power, V is voltage, and I is current. This formula shows us that the power consumed by a device is directly proportional to the applied voltage and the current passing through it.

Furthermore, power is generally measured in Watts (W). However, when we talk about the energy consumption of a device over a certain period of time, we use the measure Kilowatt-hour (kWh), which is the amount of energy consumed by a 1kW device operating for one hour.

Relevance of the Theme

Electricity is an indispensable part of modern life and is used to power a multitude of devices we use daily. However, excessive and irresponsible energy use can lead to various negative consequences, such as high energy costs, waste of natural resources, and environmental impact due to energy production.

Therefore, understanding the energy consumption of appliances is essential to be able to use energy responsibly. Knowing how to calculate the power and energy consumption of appliances can help us make more informed choices when buying new appliances, and also to use the appliances we already have more efficiently.

Through this project, we aim to give students the ability to calculate the energy consumption of appliances and propose actions to optimize energy use.

Practical Activity: Electric Power in Action

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to introduce the concept of electric power in a practical and applied way. Students will analyze the use of electric power in their own homes, compute electric power, calculate energy consumption and potential environmental impact, and finally, suggest a plan for optimizing energy use.

Project Description

This project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and is expected to last two to four hours for each student. The project should be completed in one week.

Students will identify the main household appliances in their residences (e.g., refrigerator, light bulbs, television, computer, etc.), collect the power data of these appliances (usually found on the product label or user manual), and calculate the energy consumption of these appliances.

Based on these calculations, students will discuss ways to optimize energy use, considering the efficiency of each appliance and propose a set of actions to save energy in their homes.

Required Materials

  • List of the main household appliances in their homes
  • Power data of the appliances (found on the product label or user manual)
  • Calculator
  • Notebook or sheet of paper to write down the calculations
  • Internet access for research

Step by Step

  1. Each group should create a list of the main electrical appliances used in their homes.
  2. Then, they should identify the power of these appliances. This information can usually be found on the product label or user manual. If they do not have this information, they can estimate the power based on internet research.
  3. Next, students should calculate the amount of energy (in kWh) that each appliance consumes in an hour, in a day, and in a month. For this, they can use the formula E=P.t, where E is energy, P is power, and t is time.
  4. Based on the calculations made, students should propose a plan to optimize energy use. This may include suggestions such as replacing incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs, using more natural daylight, unplugging appliances when not in use, among others.
  5. Finally, students will prepare a report detailing the entire process, from data collection, calculations made, to the proposed plan for optimizing energy use.

Project Deliverables

The deliverables of this project are: the calculations made, the energy use optimization plan, and the written report containing:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and real-world application as well as the objective of this project.
  • Development: Detailed explanation of the process carried out, from data collection, calculations made, to the proposed plan for optimizing energy use. Here, students should present and discuss the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project.

The written report is a key piece for the completion of the project, which should reflect the students' experience during the practical activity, the discoveries they made, the difficulties they faced, and how they overcame them. It should also demonstrate an understanding of the theme through theoretical explanation and calculations made.
