The Moon is the Earth's only natural satellite, and its presence has significant meaning for Earth and life as we know it. The Moon influences the movement of tides, has implications on Earth's rotation, and its light has served as a guide for nighttime navigation for millennia. Furthermore, its study presents us with fascinating phenomena, such as lunar phases and eclipses.
Since the dawn of humanity, we have looked up at the sky and wondered about the nature of the Moon and other celestial bodies. Throughout the centuries, this curiosity has led to great advancements in our understanding of the universe. In 1969, the Apollo 11 space mission marked the first time humans set foot on the Moon, something that previously only existed in dreams and fantastic science fiction stories.
Introduction
In this project, we will explore the Moon and its phases. In our science classes, we have already discussed that the Moon goes through a complete cycle of phases every 29.5 days, that the term 'Moon Phase' is used to describe the appearance of the illuminated portion of the Moon as seen from Earth, and that the moon phases are: New, Waxing Crescent, Full, and Waning Crescent.
We know that the Moon phases are caused by the relative positions of the Moon, Earth, and the Sun, but truly understanding how this happens can be a bit complicated. In this project, we will have the opportunity to build a model of this relationship that will help us better understand these concepts, as well as predict the Moon phases and eclipses.
This project is relevant because it helps us understand important parts of our solar system, as well as the role the Moon plays in it. It also helps us comprehend how science has been used throughout history to answer questions about the universe.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Modeling the Phases of the Moon
Project Objective
Build a physical model of the Moon phases and use this model to predict the phases and understand how and why eclipses occur.
Detailed Project Description
In this activity, you will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be responsible for building a physical model representing the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun, and through it, demonstrate and explain the Moon phases and the occurrence of eclipses.
Required Materials
- Three styrofoam balls of different sizes to represent the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun;
- Barbecue sticks to connect the spheres;
- A flashlight to represent the Sun's light;
- Colored pens to paint the celestial bodies;
- Tape.
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution
- Paint the styrofoam balls to represent the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun.
- Use the barbecue sticks to connect the spheres, positioning the Earth in the center, the Moon around the Earth, and the Sun in a fixed position.
- Once the model is assembled, position the flashlight to illuminate the Earth and the Moon.
- Slowly rotate the sphere representing the Moon around the Earth and observe how the light illuminates different parts of the Moon, creating the phases we observe from Earth.
- Make predictions about which phases will occur depending on the relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun, and use the model to confirm your predictions.
- Discuss in your group what happens during a lunar and solar eclipse and try to demonstrate these phenomena with the same model.
All groups will have one week to complete the project, and all members must collaborate equally.

After completing the model and conducting the experiments, each group must prepare a report that will include:
- Introduction: The student must contextualize the Moon theme, its relevance, and the importance of this project. Also, include a description of the project's objective.
- Development: Here you should describe the model built, the predictions made, and the results observed. Explicitly detail the Moon phases and how and why eclipses occur, using the theory learned in class and the sources consulted. Describe the methodology used, the steps taken, and the materials used.
- Conclusion: In this section, summarize the main points of the work, the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn from the project implementation. Report how your understanding has changed or deepened during the model implementation.
- Bibliography: List all sources of information used to carry out the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc. Remember to cite correctly to give proper credit.
This report should not only be a description of what was done but also a reflection of your understanding of the topic. It should be clear, concise, and accurate. Reports will be evaluated based on both the accuracy of the information provided and the quality of the writing and organization of the report.
